But the council still wants to know what plans, if any, the federal government has for almost 20,000 acres of land which were expro- priated for the airport site. By an overwhelming vote of 23-7, Durham council last week turned thumbs down on a motion by Oshawa councillor John DeHart and Pickering councillor Alex Robertson urging Durham Region to go on record as beng in strong support of building the Pickering airport, and that ministers at both the federal and pro- vincial levels be so advised. . The motion was to have been debated at the April 29th meeting, but councillor Robertson was away on holidays then. However, at that meeting, four anti- airport speakers, includi © Dr. Paul Godfrey of PO fame, strongly Me Rail the airport and urged Durham council to defeat the motion. Council was told that last week Pickering spent $9000 fighting three fires which had been deliberately set on the airport land. After a debate which droned on for about an hour, Durham council rejects Pickering airport Pickering councillor Laurie Cahill proposed an amend- ment calling for support of a cargo airport at the site, with the rest of the land reverting to agriculture.
