Rabies has been confirmed in a skunk killed last week near homes on the Oshawa Road south of Port Perry. The skunk was shot after it - was observed behaving in an erratic manner, and showing aggressive tendencies Permits (From page 1) with a stated value of $862,000, compared to just seven permits for residences issued in April, 1980, The actual total for all. building permits in Scugog Township last month was $1,094,750. As'. an indication of just how severe the 1980 slump - was in this municipality, the entire total was $3.7 million. If the current trend this year continues, the Township should be able to match the 1979 levels when building permits totalled $7.6 million. towards dogs and a cat in the . area of the Oshawa Road and Shirley Road, about three miles south of Port Perry. The confirmation of rabies turned up in tests conducted by the federal department of agriculture, and three dogs which may have had some contact with the skunk are now in quarantine for three months. Mrs. Lucy Wilson, owner of one of the dogs, said as far as she knows all three dogs have had rabies shots. She said two of the dogs were sprayed by the skunk. Residents of that part of the Township and all rural areas of Scugog should be extremely cautious if they see wild animals such as skunks or foxes near their homes. And they should see 'to it that their pet dogs and cats receive anti-rabies shots. This is thought to be the first confirmed case of rabid animal in-the Scugog area this spring. a e . 5Year ~ Annual Interest GREYMAC MORTGAGE CORPORATION Member of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation Investment Certificates Guaranteed 17% "Subject to Change without Notice." However, Mr. Meier went on to say he doesn't expect the strike will leave any permanent bitter relations. between the union and Regional management. And:both sides are quoted as saying there were pleased with the way the other group reacted during the six day strike. The strike shut down two regionally operated landfill sites, including the one in Scugog on Regional Road 8, just west of Port Perry. And Region asks for another review & = 3 : Durham Region council has asked the provincial government to review the representation of the area municipalities on Regional council and come up with a study paper by the end of October. The motion to see the review of the representation was introduced by the mayors of two municipalities who feel they are currently under-represented at regional council. The motion was approved by council last week, but only after a portion was deleted which said the maximum size of the Council should not exceed the - present 30 members. Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley and Ajax Mayor Bill McLean introduced the motion, and both had earlier submitted briefs to regional council outlining why they believe their municipalities should have an extra rep on the council. Whitby currently has three reps on council and Ajax has two. The motion to seek the review of the representation got opposition from Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard who both expressed fears that if the provincial government starts tampering with the rep- resentation on council, their - municipalities could end up with less members than they have now. "I can't support this motion, although I have some sympathies for Ajax and Whitby," said Mayor Taylor. "Scugog was not over- joyed at joining the Region in the first place, but we were guaranteed two seats on this . council," he went on to say. "If rep by pop is used, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships could end up with just one member on the council," he stated. Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock all send two members to Regional Council at this - time. Newcastle has four reps on Regional council, and Mayor Rickard pointed out that his municipality is the largest geographically in the Region. He said that rep by pop. could have a detrimental effect on farming in the Region, which he called the largest single industry. about 50 Durham manage- ment personnel took over the operation of water and sewage treatment plants to help insure that essential services to the public were not totally disrupted. By the middle of last week, the Department of Health and the Ministry of the Environment were both getting ready to monitor the situation at sewage treat- ment plants in the southern part of Durham, Sewage treatment for Port Perry involves an un- manned system of lagoons located near the landfill site on Regional Road 8. At last Wednesday's meet- Terry - Linen PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 20, 1981 -- 3 ing of Regional council in Whitby, strikers set up picket lines at the entrances to the parking lots at Region- al headquarters on Rossland Road. ~ And when 10:00 a.m. meet- ing got underway, about 50 strikers sat in the public gallery under the watchful eye of several Durham Region police officers who escorted the strikers to their seats in the gallery. However, there were no incidents during the council session, and by. the time councillors -had returned from their lunch break, almost all the strikers had left the chambers. However," the contractor for the Township found one of the alternative sites was closed last Monday, another refused to let him un-load his trucks saying they had not received authoriziation, and yet another refused unless he paid in advance. The difficulties had been sorted out by the time the strike ended late last week.
