A snow storm, and on top of that a small tornado and high winds did considerable damage in some areas. This happened on May 16th. Uxbridge is making arrangements for a celebra- tion when the town will receive an official Coat of Arms and M.P.P. Matthew Dymond will be the speaker. Miss Marilyn Scott, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Scott, obtained the highest marks of the entire music festival in Lindsay, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. 2 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 17, 1961 Mr. and Mrs. Les Faux celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Lee. ' John Howard Griffin, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.N. Griffin will be ordained at Chalmers Church in Kingston on May 31. At the regular meeting of council, it was passed that the Municipal Office be closed through July and August. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Brown, Blackstock, cele- brated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Mrs. Ruby Roach and Mrs. Dorothy Nelson attended a camp training course at Doe Lake. 15 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 19, 1966 Special services were held in the Port Perry United Church on Sunday, May 15th to celebrate the 80th Anniversary in the Church. Rev Alec Rice was assisted in the service by guest speaker, Rev. Fred Jobin of Port Credit. William Harrison, Port Perry was recently elected president of the Port Perry Chamber of Commerce for 1966. Mr. Harrison is currently editor of the Port Perry Star and has also been editor-manager of the Colborne Chronicle in past years. Over 150 guests attended a two-day show by the "Junior Artists of Port Perry" held at the Scout Hall. The teacher of the young art students is Mrs. Douglas Wallace of Port Perry. The 2nd annual Penify Draw and Tea held by Maybelle Rebekah Lodge members at the Oddfellows Hall was a big success. Lucky winners of the draws included Velma Foster, Greenbank; Arnold Roach of Manchester and Mrs. V. Bailey of Blackstock. 10 YEARS AGO Wednesday, May 19, 1971 Children at R.H. Cornish Public School had extra time off from their classes Tuesday, due to a bomb scare which turned out to be a hoax. One of Greenbank's gifted musicians, Mr. George Beare, sang in the choir at the Oddfellows Centennial Service in Port Perry. Port Perry council, at the last regular meeting, _ passed a by-law prohibiting the setting off of fireworks and firecrackers in the village without a permit. Port Perry High School held its annual Drama Night with an enthusiastic audience in attendance. I would like to ask Mr. Espey if he has been to Caesarea on a Saturday or Sunday morning while the fishermen park their cars anywhere they can, while the restaurant will have facilities for parking which will be off the street, while the patrons are dining. It was also mentioned in the article that Caesarea is a hamlet of about 150 families. We trust Mrs. Don Free- man will soon recuperate from her stay in the Port Perry Hospital. Well the busy Pioneer Days week end is over. Tho' the rain forgot to come this year, the winds made it somewhat uncomfortable but did not seem to discour- age the popularity of this event. In my mind, one display of quilts was out- It told so many interesting stories and represented hundreds of work hours. But then you had to be there to find some phase that appealed to your interests and there was a great variety. However, this is just the beginning of a busy summer for the museum when many groups or individuals of all ages will want to take advan- tage of a worthwhile adven- ture. The "Head" U.C.W. will be serving at the Tuck Shop this week. Both U.C.W.'s will cater to weddings this Saturday. Don't forget breakfast and refreshments by the Lake at Latcham Centre during the Annual Canoe the Nonquon on Saturday, June 6. This week invitations are going out to donors for Church Improvements to be present at the Dedication Sunday on June 14. I cannot possibly conceive the idea that a 39 or 40 name petition could, prevent a person from going into business, especially when the majority of residents are in support of giving the applicant an opportunity to - establish himself in the community.
