Routine queries on water bills will not cost $35 " Durham residents can be assured that routine queries of their water or sewer bills will not cost them a $5 fee, Regional council will de- bate today (May 27) a recommendation from the finance department that any water customer seeking a detailed history or statement of their water bill will be charged a $5 fee. However, a spokesman for the Region's finance depart- ment told the Star Friday there has been some mis- conception about the intent of this recommendation. He said it would apply only to those who want a detailed history of their account over a long period, and not for the average water customer who -phones with a routine query that can be answered quickly over the phone. Most of the detailed inquiries regarding water bill histories come from businesses or the owners of rental properties who need a yearly statement for income tax purposes and for some reason or another have lost or neglected to keep their monthly receipts. Other detailed requests come from lawyers acting in property transactions who want to"know if the water bill 'is in arrears. Lawyers are already being charged the $5 fee for this information. But the finance depart- ment spokesman stressed that customers will never be charged any fee for routine phone inquiries concerning their water bills. ~ The recommendation needs the support of council this week before it can be brought into force.
