Durham College holds graduation ceremony A total of 580 students, Durham College's largest graduating class ever, received their graduation diplomas and certificates at the thirteenth annual convo- cation held Saturday, May 23rd at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Wearing ceremonial gowns for the occasion, the graduates came from many points in and beyond Durham Region. They were given an emphatic challenge - to meet the impact of rapidly chang- ing technology - from Norman Williams, the Chair- man of the Council of Regents, the chief governing body for the 22 Ontario Community Colleges. Mr. Williams emphasized the many changes taking place in Canada today, and stated that the role of the colleges was to equip the graduates to surmount and understand confusion, and even .more importantly, to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. He referred first, to the constitutional challenge - inasmuch as Canada is currently engaged in a fundamental debate con- cerning the political structure and division of powers within our country. He spoke of the energy challenge facing many countries, including Canada, and stated that current negotiations in pricing and revenue distribution are giving rise to regional distri- bution that must be resolved. But most of all, he empha- sized what he termed the 'productivity challenge'® and the ability of the gradu- ates and the College system to meet it. He called this the most vital challenge facing Canada today. The convocation speaker was introduced by the Chair- man of the Board of Gover- nors, Ewart Marston.
