French Immersion pro, grams starting at the Kind- ergarten level are now available at two schools in Durham, one in Oshawa and the other in Pickering. A third program is slated to start this fall in Uxbridge. A group of parents in Scugog Township has been attempting to organize an Immersion program in the Township, and 39 parents had signed forms this spring to have their children enter an Immersion program at the Kindergarten level this fall. There was some confusion at the Board meeting Mon- day about whether this num- ber is still correct as Scugog trustee Gord Goode told the meeting he has received phone calls from 11 parents who now do not want their kids in French Immersion classes. Carol Hobbs, one of the organizers of the Scugog Parents for French Immer- sion committee was at the Board meeting Monday night. She said afterwards that she was disappointed that it now appears as if there will be no program in the Township this fall. However, Mrs. Hobbs did say she was encouraged by the action taken by the PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 25, 1980 -- 7 Board earlier in the meeting to extend the Immersion programs already in place to the grade eight level, and also that the program be made available in other communities when those communities can indicate there are at least 26 students to enter at the Kindergarten level. The Board also passed an amendment stating that French Immersion should cause no dislocation of pres- ent staff or programs at a school. Mr. Graham said after the meeting that he was generally satisfied that the Board had withdrawn the motion for French Immer- p objects to French Immersion sion in Scugog this fall. He said there had been a lot of confusion in the past few days among people in Cartwright when it was learned that the public school in Blackstock might be the location for a French Immersion program.
