Mr. Emmerson will receive the medal from Lieutenant Governor John Black Aird in the main lobby of the Legislative Building, Queen's Park today at 5:30 p.m. Above, Larry is seen working with one of the disabled students he taught to skin dive from Bloorview Children's Hospital. Larry Emmerson of Port Perry, will be awarded the Ontario Medal for Good Citi- zenship at a ceremony to- night (June 30) in the Legis- lative Building at Queens Park. Along with 12 other Ontario residents, Mr. Emmerson will receive the silver medal from Lieu- tenant-governor John Black Aird. The Citizenship medal is in recognition of Mr. Emmerson's development of innovative techniques for teaching scuba diving to young, physically handi- capped people. Mr. Emmerson's teaching of scuba to the handicapped has attracted national and international attention over the past year or so, was the subject of a feature length film shown on television, and earned him Diver of the Year honours at a recent "convention in Boston, Mass. Working with yqung people at the Bloorview Children's Hospital in Toronto, Mr. Emmerson, 30, adapted diving techniques to their specific physical handicaps and five of his students so far have received recognized certificates from the National Association of Underwater Instructors. His 'work with the handicapped continues, and suba clubs as far away as Hawaii have expressed interest in the teaching methods. The Ontario Citizenship Medal was established by the provincial government in 1973 for "citizens whose exceptional actions outside their regular vocations have contributed to the well being of fellow citizens." The silver medal is designed by Toronto sculpter Gerald Gladstone. A close game until the bottom of the fifth inning, Kinsmen were leading at the time 5 to 3, Solid pitching for Lorne Lee by Andrew Goss and good defensive plays especially two line drives which were snagged by Sheri Jones kept them in the game until the hitters took over and increased the score. Both teams played well. On Tuesday, June 23, the Juniors played their game in Nestleton and Blackstock. The match at Nestleton pitted Turner's Green Giants with All Flags Shell. This was a well played game and Haines came out ahead 9 to 5. Good pitching was highlighted here as Preston Denault walked only one Lions batter and Kevin Ferguson replied with only two walks. The home run hitters were Brad Martin and David Sandy for Haines and Kevin Ferguson scored a home run for Lions. As mentioned this was a well played game and was a good finish to "another week of softball.
