After all, who doesn't want to get "more fish to the gallon"? To help you get the maxi- mum performance from your fishing rig - or any boat, Midget The Ontario Midget Soft- ball tournament kicks off in Port Perry this Friday evening with 23 teams taking part, including the Port Perry Malmont Farm squad. This is the second year in a row that Port Perry Minor Softball has hosted this for that matter - the Allied Boating Association of Canada makes the following suggestions in preparing a boat and motor combination to utilize all of the perform- ance capabilities built into it. First, the boat. The area of the boat which most directly affect its perform- ance is the bottom portion of the hull that contacts the water when the boat is run- ning. This area of the hull should not only be clean, but should be very straight with- tourney set to tournament which will see the best midget softball clubs in Ontario competing for the right to represent Ontario at the Canadian finals later this summer in Swift Current, Sask. To straighten wood or fiberglass hulls, use a long, straight sanding block with a coarse sanding paper. Move the block parallel to the centerline of the hull and check the surface periodic- ally with the straightedge. In some cases, it may be- come necessary to fill some of the low areas to prevent excessive sanding. At this time, also sharpen all edges and corners on the running areas of the hull, including the strakes, the chines and the bottom edge of the transom. Now, the motor. Manu- facturers do not normally recommend any modifica- tions to their motors, other than those which they release to their dealers through service bulletins. Attempts to modify the powerhead, lower unit, ignition system, or carbure- tors in an attempt to "soup up" a motor will usually result in a loss of perform- ance as well as poor idling and less low speed power. Confine the work on your motor to making sure it is developing its designed power output. This can be accomplished by making sure the motor is in good mechanical condition and that it is adjusted as per tune-up specifications in the owner's manual for the motor. Finally, the motor position on the boat. The motor should be mounted so that the lower unit cavitation plate is level with the bottom of the hull. And the motor should be 'trimmed' to provide maximum recom- mended RPM, fuel economy and riding comfort - and "more fish to the gallon'.
