Scugog continues fo grow, population reaches 13,087 The fastest growing muni- cipality in the Durham Region last year was Whitby where the population jumped from 32,952 to 35,359.. And the total population of Durham Region increased by 4,000 last year and now stands at 276,775. Oshawa is the largest municipality with a population of 115,486. In Scugog Township, Ward 1 (Reach) has the largest population with 4394 perman- ent residents, followed by Ward 2 (Port Perry) with 3921; Ward 4 (Cartwright) with 3247 and Ward 3 (Scugog Island) with 1525. . Since 1976, the population of Port Perry has jumped by almost 600 residents, the largest increase of all the four wards in the muni- cipality. Census figures are compiled every September by the provincial assessment office in Whitby. However, there is a possi- bility this will be done every two years from now on. It is expected that Scugog Township population will continue to increase, and if the number of building permits for new homes is any indication the increase over 1980 could be signi- ficant. | The population of Scugog Township has shown a slow but steady increase over the last six years. The latest figures avail- able as of September 1980, show Scugog Township with. a permanent population of 13,087. The number of Lake Scugog cottagers increases this number considerably during the summer months, of course. o The 1980 figure of 13,087 Open Daily 10-6 Closed Mondays & Tuesdays 986-5656 represents a slight inrease over 1979 when the figure was 12,824. This is just about the same rate of increase the Township has experienced since 1975 when the popula- 'tion was 10,962. The population of Scugog continues to keep ahead of its two neighbouring municipal- ities, Uxbridge to the west and Brock to the north. Uxbridge had 11,173 Museum 'fosil-mobile' residents as of last year, and Brock had 9,016. Of all the municipalities in° Durham Region, Brock and New- castle were the only ones to experience an actual decline in population last year. Figures show there were 94 fewer people in Brock in 1980 than the previous year. In . Newcastle, the population decreased from 32,163 to 31,855. - to visit Port Perry On Friday afternoon, July 24, find some time to drop into the Royal Ontario Museum's 'Fossil-mobile' that will be parked at the foot of Queen Street, in Port Perry. The travelling bus houses approximately 250 fossils, ranging in age from 365 to 500 million years old, and are mainly examples of inverte- brate animals that lived in and around the tropical sea that covered Ontario at that time. Also on exhikit will be micro-fossils that are evidence of the oldest form of life on this planet - 2 billion years ago! The 35 foot long 'fossil- mobile' is one of two roving ROM buses travelling | throughout Ontario from April to November. The buses: visit schools in the spring and fall, and museums, libraries and parks during the summer. The extension service of the ROM is in co-operation with the Outreach Program of the Ministry of Culture and Recreation. It was inaugur- ated in 1973 to extend the museum outside the Toronto area. Mr. Robert Kirkman, co- ordinator of the mobile museum program, will be available to interpret the display. You can visit the museumobile on Friday from 11-1 p.m. and from 2-5 p.m. There is no charge to the public.
