gs y Pr Jack Forster of Simcoe Street has been an avid gardener most life and he's never seen a sunflower like the one growing in his backyard. At last count it had more than separate flowers on one plant. Jack says it's\care when a sunflower has more than one flower. I do now why this one has so many flowers, but I've never seen anything like it in my life,' says Jack. Mr. Rensink, a Port Perry contractor, returned Satur- day from Toyama Japan, where he and ten members of the Baptist Church in Barrie, donated their time and labour to help build the first Baptist "Church in Toyama. Aside from a sore back he picked up from sleeping on traditional Japanese mats during his three weeks in Toyama, Mr. Rensink 'brought back with him fond memories of the Japanese people and their customs. "It was a very worthwhile experience, one which I would do again in a minute," Mr. Rensink told the Star after he returned. He was most impressed with the Japanese people: their honesty, politeness, 'efficiency and dedication to hard work. | TRUSS CLEARANCE 13TRUSSES-23'10"-5/12-24" OH -reg. $421.85 Mr. Rensink, who is a member of the Port Perry Baptist Church was invited to join the group of Barrie Baptists. Each paid his own air fare of $1500 and part of their living expenses at a Baptist Mission Centre in Toyama. The group shared one large sleeping room at a Mission Centre, and they had to take a 35 minute trip by train and street car to get to the church under construc- tion by 7 o'clock each morning. The working day lasted until six in the evening, but. Mr. Rensink did take one full day off and a couple of afternoons to enjoy some sightseeing.' The group toured an agri- cultural centre, a factory, and a silk industry where the worms are no longer fed mulberry leaves, but rather commercial garbage. A pure silk kimona, by the way, cost about $7,000 in American funds. "We knew pretty well what we were supposed to do, and we used a lot of sign lan- guage," said Mr. Rensink with a smile. Actually, the son of a missionary served as an interpreter for the Canadian group. The Canadian Baptists were a cross section of indi- viduals including a high school teacher, sales, reps, pipe fitter, two pastors, and the deputy policy chief from Barrie. Mr. Rensink said the deputy chief talked to his counter-part in Toyama and found to his amazement that the most serious crime in that city this year had been a couple of robberies. "I think if you left your wallet lying in the middle of the street, it would still be there the next day," said Mr. Rensink, amazed at the honesty and politeness of the people he met, The new church is the first Baptist Church in Toyama, and will be completed in about three weeks for the congregation of 40. In the entire city, there are prob- ably less than 200 Christians. It was the first trip to the Orient for Mr. Rensink, who originally came to Canada from Holland. And it left a lasting impressin, to the point where he says he's going to take his wife there on a holiday some day.
