Sa 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- by Glenys Windsor Another season has fin- ished for the Port Perry Squirt Girls. An enjoyable season it was, despite many " rainouts, The girls had their tourn- ament on Saturday, August 29th. Two games were > played. The first game was between Kinsmen and Little Britain Kinsmen winning 13-7. Kinsmen were coached by Phyllis Geer and Marion Barkey. Little Britain coached by John Heyes and Vern Avery. The second game saw Kinsmen come out victorious over Gord Lewis Motors 19-10. They learn fast and sometimes "even sur- prise themselves. As for instance, when a girls glove is in the right position at the right time, the ball lands smack in there and with a delightful surprised look on her face she exclaims, "I got it!"'. They have fun. All three teams showed on Saturday they can be good sports. A good example of this was shown by Little Britain, after losing that first game the whole team, including all the parents, stayed to cheer on the second "Canada Cup is Coming" _GETTHE ddr, NS BLACKSTOCK ANTENNA & TOWER Towers, Colour Heads, Rotors, Boosters, etc. kia 13 nn -- -- -- -- -- --_ --_ --_ -- --_ o-- Se a en nt ad nd Saad nd SE Sm Wd WE WE WS Sm WW we wm We --" -- ---- -- ---- -- THE CAPTAIN'S CORNER we I, MARINE SUPPLY * ACCESSORIES * GIFTS PORT PERRY PLAZA - HWY 7A EAST - 985-3657 ATTENTION! -- -- -- ------ -- -- a -- -- ---- ---- f-- -- -- o-- -- --_ WW SS -------- -- -We Now Have - T-SHIRTS, BASEBALL SHIRTS & SWEATSHIRTS. . 'The day ended with Wayne Venning, vice-president of Port Perry Minor Softball and myself, convenor of Squirt Girls, presenting ribbons to the defeated Girls win Squirt tourney teams and champ crest plus ribbon to our winners. Our Port Perry girls then enjoyed light refreshments with the Little Britain team. A successful day enjoyed by all. . Nine bantams in fournament by Coach Barry Page Our Port. Perry Lion Bantam soccer team had nine of its players selected to 'play in a tournament in Cobourg, last weekend. They were Paul Bateman, Ian Porter, Al Bouwmeester, Andrew Zoller, David Bond, Richard Ginn, Gord Brown, Mark Batters, Ken Huggins. They were placed on one of the two Oshawa All Star teams made up from the six teams that Port is competing against this year in the Oshawa Bantam division. The team our boys were. on played very well. They were very competitive in every game but unfortunately came out short handed in all three of their games. Jan Porter, from Port's team was mentioned to be one of the most valuable players for his strong defensive game. Since there are not many Bantam soccer " tournaments in this area our boys learned a lot and enjoyed this chance to play. The Port Perry Lion team ended their regular season in third place in the Oshawa bantam division. The quarter finals are Tuesday, September 1 with the semi finals and finals on September 13 at a Civic field in Oshawa. The number of reserve players didn't match the oppositions as we were short in numbers and in talent. An --NOTICE -- MEN'S NO-CONTACT HOCKEY LEAGUE (See Classified Section under Notices for More Details!) example of this was when we had to play against the other Oshawa team. They had five reserve players equal to the five on the field, and our boys had to play with three reserves and in one game only one reserve. This made it difficult since the calibre of play was extremly good and our boys would wear down. The final scores were 1-1 against Peterborough, 2-1 against Oshawa Willowdale, and 3-1 against Rochester U.S.A. Greece. Port Perry Lion players scored all three of their goals, Mark Butters. Being selected Yamaha Dealer of the Year is nothing new for the Asselstines as they were awarded the honour by the company for the third straight year.-- The Yamaha team in this area is Vera, Floyd and Vern Asselstine, of R.R. 2 Blackstock. In the fourth Haines tightened up defensively and picked off the third out on an attempt to steal home. The fifth inning saw Anne Hoogeveen triple and score three runs. In the sixth 'Brian Van Camp homered for the Lions and again Haines Esso picked off runner stealing home for the third out. Haines came to bat and Brian Jones singled and scored a runner from second.
