Benson Hamilton, superin- tendent of business for the Durham Separate School Board made the request in a letter to council. Mr. Hamilton says in his letter that the OPP suggest there should be a crossing guard at the entrance to the new school. He goes on to say that one alternative could be extend- ing the sidewalk on the south CARPET WAREHOUSE _ side of Highway 7A about 150 feet so that it connects with the entrance to the grounds of the new school. The sidewalk extension would allow students to cross the highway at the existing cross walk and guard west of the school and then walk down the south side. Although council decided that the Roads committee should study the request and come up with a recom- mendation, members noted that Highway 7A is slated for reconstruction next summer by the provincial govern- ment and this includes the construction of sidewalks. Scugog Township had been named as one of the defendants in the legal action, and on September 14, council agreed it would not pursue legal costs from the plaintiffs. Joan Heintzman, president of the Central Seven said the Association also agreed not to pursue its legal costs, when the court action is AN dropped. Last summer, the plaintiffs had sought a temporary injunction against the group home, but the application was rejected by Mr. Justice Parker, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Central Seven opened the Group Home more than a year ago, and there are presently eight handicapped A persons living there and working at the Central Seven Workshop in Port Perry.
