Late last Tuesday after- noon, Mr. Ladouceur was scouring Palmer Park and the Kinsmen Beach with a sensitive $600 metal detector, looking for coins and just about anything of value. p His take after about an hour's work was a modest handful of pennies, dimes and one quarter, adding up to about $1. That may not seem like a lot, but it didn't bother Mr. Ladouceur. "This is just a hobby for me. You never know what you might find," he said. The metal detector, complete with ear-phones, king for treasure runs off a nine volt battery. It can detect metal objects up to four feet in the ground, but of course most coins are no more than a few inches under the surface. When asked how long it might take to find enoug' coins to pay for the detector, he just smiled and said: "A friend of mine has a detector and he has found many gold rings in parks and on beaches." Looking for treasure in this way is only a hobby for Mr. Ladouceur, who says he has a lot of other hobbies such as collecting military vehicles. And if he doesn't find enough coins to pay the bills, he has a full time job to fall back on as a diesel mechanic.
