PPHS teams ~~ runintosome top competition by Kevin Harris Basketball - Port Perry High School girls had a rough time this week, playing the always powerful Eastdale Collegiate School. A The seniors were matched up against the defending =. L,0.S.S.A. champions. The girls knew that Eastdale was a strong ball club and their toughest competition. ~The final score was 67-57 for Eastdale. Port led through most of the first quarter. Eastdale outscored Port Perry 17 to 12 at the end of period one. The team got into foul trouble early in the game and this enabled Eastdale to capitalize on their weakness. The half ended 38-28 in favour of Eastdale. ~The rebels looked totally out of the game with only five minutes left on the clock. Port staged a major comeback though. The girls 'were down by more than twenty points dt one time but came' back with excellent shooting and a great defence. With less than two minutes remaining Port was within 8 points. : The girls didn't-give up through out the contest and gave a good effort despite losing their centre K Cope who fouled out of the game. _ Barb Elliott showed superb outside shooting and ended the game with 18 points. Jennifer Simmonds scored 14 points while Kelly Kasper hooped in 12 points. Paula Haugan came off the bench and had 6 points. Kira Cope and Rhonda White scored 4 points each. Eastdale looked awesome in the first quarter. Port couldn't get set into their normal calm cool and collected game. The first quarter ended 16 to 4 in favour of Eastdale. The team could not get on track offensively at any part of the game. The team is looking forward to their next meeting. The game was just - © not of the calibre we are used to seeing our juniors play. The final score of the game was 45-29 for Eastdale, Port Perry's top point getters were Karen-Baker and Sophia Brendon who had 8 points a piece, Kelly Steele and Lee Ann Barclay scored 4 points each. The girls put forth their strongest game of the year. Positive thinking, superb effort and good team work gave the midgets their second win in a row. Port looked good in the first quarter. The period . ended 8-2. The team looked just as good in the rest of the half. It ended 17-8. The third quarter was a defensive contest it ended 19-11 at the buzzer. The midget squad out lasted the Eastdale team by a 25-17 count, The games leading scorer with 10 points was Port's Heidi Spannbauer who played a strong intelligent game. Janice Jackman played very solid and ended the game with 7 points and 7 rebounds. Kelly Raines had a good defensive game and completed it with 3 points, Sue Phillips and Karen Tomchishan wound up with a basket each. Karen had a good effort on the boards with 7 rebounds. Martha Esdale, Gerry MacDonald, Amy Ware, Laura Tremblay and Janet Simmonds all had good efforts. Keep up the work girls. Both the juniors and midgets will travel to Clarke High School next week and try to push their records to 3-1. Volleyball The Senior boys volleyball team travelled to Dunbarton High 'School last weekend * (Saturday, October 17). The tournament consisted of some pretty good competi- 'tion. Port won its first two games against Durham Christian. The squad was - defeated easily- two straight by a very strong Toronto - team. Port then went on and had to-win 5 of 6 games to make the finals. Port then | went on to take out Parkdale 2 straight. : The boys then lost their first game to a tough Glen- view team. The rebels were down 8-1 in the second game when coach Hunt took time out. The team came back tremendously and won 15-11. Unfortunately, it came down to the last game and Dunbar- ton came out on top. The seniors will be in another tournament this Saturday and hope to better their endurance and consistency. Soccer | The boys soccer teams both had set backs last week: The juniors and seniors lost in tough games. Ajax High School looked superior in the two contests. The juniors lost 3-0 while the seniors lost 2-0. Coach Westlake looks for- ward to their next meeting and believes his junior team will give them a much better game. PCIe
