Meals On Wheels! Every Monday, Wednes- day and Friday. including holidays, Community Care volunteers deliver the hot noon hour meals to people who, .by reason of age, physical or mental handicap or illness are temporarily or permanently unable to prepare their meals. Three drivers each day deliver routes in Port Perry, Prince Albert and the Blackstock, Nestleton and Caesarea areas. The Community Nursing Home, Food Service Super- visor Mrs. Marie Venning dnd her staff have been involved in the preparation of Meals since the first delivery on October 25, 1971. More recently, the Commun- ity Memorial Hospital, Food Service Supervisor Miss " Marie Rice and her staff 'have been supplying meals since the program had to expand in 1978 due to increased demands in Port Perry and new requests from the Blackstock area. The Kinsmen Club of Port Perry has been the major of operation supporter of Meals on . Wheels over the years. Their sizeable annual donation to the program helps to reduce the cost of equipment and supplies. : The first Meals on Wheels were delivered by volunteers to 5 people in Port Perry on Wednesday October 25, 1971. Records indicate that this was made possible through the efforts of Mrs. Judy McColl, .Chairman; "Mr: Jerry Jackman, finance Chairman; other interested citizen and the local Service Clubs, : Today 26 meals are delivered each day to people who have been referred to the program by their doctors. The original group main- tained the program for seven years - before Scugog Community Care was organized in 1978. Commun- ity Care was asked and agreed to take over the program. The organization wants to recognize the contributions made by all the co- ordinators, volunteer drivers, Hospital and Nursing Home staff, and Kinsmen Club members who have helped over the years with the Meals on Whee program. : Group meets Members of the Toronto- Havelock Passenger Associ- ation met Monday with" provincial transportation minister James Snow in their continuing efforts to save the rail service. The Association has been fighting to keep the service since the federal govern- ment announced last summer it would go out of operation. i "In their meeting with Mr. Snow, representatives from the Passenger Association asked - for provincial guarantees that some kind of passenger service will continue on this line even-if the federal government carries through with the decision to suspend the current VIA service. : In a statement released prior to the Monday meeting, 'with Snow to save VIA the Association said it "must desperately look to the _provincial government for. some reasonable alternative to keep the service opera- ting." The Toronto-Havelock Passenger Association has about 150 members who have been fighting intensely : to . keep the service running ~ since "the government announcement earlier this year. Most of the members use the 160 seat train each day to get to their jobs in Toronto, and the Association has collected a petition with 5500 signatures of people who support the position.
