He is now devoting full time to his art and his prints are being shown in galleries in Toronto, Ottawa and Oshawa. Local artist gains reputation for prints It has been a while in 'coming, but Port Perry artist David Smith believes he has "turned the corner" and is on the way to being recognized as one of the top .original printmakers working in Canada today. With his prints now selling through galleries in Oshawa and Ottawa and at one of the best known galleries in Toronto, Mr. Smith says he is "quite happy' with the way things have been going, and his is 'just starting to come out of the closet this year" after working at print making for many years. Mr. Smith, who lives with his wife and family on Lilla Street, has a studio in his house and his hand-made print-making press set up in a work-shop behind the house. Originally from the Kingston area, he has lived in Port Perry for the past four years and recently quit his job as a commercial SHARP - CANON TEXAS INSTRUMENT CALCULATORS | & Adding Machines PORT PERRY STAR | 235 Queen Street : 985-7383 l printer in Toronto to devote full time to his art. His prints, which run off in series of 25 or 50, are made from what is known as the intaglia etching method. It is an ancient process, used as far back as the Middle Ages to create designs on coats of armour. Through the years, such artists as Rembrandt, Goya and Picasso have worked in this medium. A ground, or coat of varnish is applied to the surface of a copper or zinc plate. and the image then scratched through the ground. The plate is dipped in a solution of nitric acid which eats into the exposed metal, creating the image below the surface of the plate. The ground is wiped off, the ink applied to the plate and then rolled through the press. Once the series of prints have been produced, the plate is destroyed. Mr. Smith says the re- sponse has been encourag- ing, and he is especially pleased that the Gallery Pascal in Toronto has bought one print from each of the series he has created. And the Gallery owner bought one for his private collection. This gallery, located near the Ontario Art Gallery, is probably the best known in the country for Canadian contemporary graphics artists. His prints are also hanging in the Ronden Gallery on . Bond Street East in Oshawa, "which handles the work of well known Canadian print makers. Mr. Smith began his work 4 a "printers devil" with a newspaper in Kingston, studied at art colleges in Toronto, worked as a printer (his most recent commercial job was with Canadian Racing Form) and now in addition to the print-making does drawings and commercial art on a commission basis. He says there is a good chance he may spend some time in the near future working on a series of prints with a print maker recogni- zed as one of the best in Canada. He's looking forward to that, stating that the experience and exposure will be good for him. Mr. Smith admits he is not much good at the marketing and public relations side of art, saying it took a lot of courage just to walk into the galleries with his work. That of course, won't be necessary once public recognition and demand comes, and David Smith, artist, may very well be on the verge. S * Not all niles are immediately available.
