The seniors were the only ones who were victorious of the three, though. The juniors and the midgets were both defeated. Seniors The senior squad came out of the first quarter winning by a score of 15-12. The game looked as if it was going to be a close one. Port's high powered offence got into gear in the second quarter by scoring twenty-one points. Their defence was also convincing, giving up only five stingy points. The half time score was 36-17. The Rebels kept a hand on the remainder of the game and won 66-36. The team had four players in double figures in the contest. Barb Elliott was the games leading point getter with 22. Kelly Kasper hooped in 12 points in the wing, Port's centre Kira Cope shot in 11 points while steady guard Jennifer, Simmonds contributed 10 points. Terri Henderson scored 4 points in her first game of the season. She has been on crutches in the past few weeks. If Terri can stay healthy she will give the team a big edge going down the schedule to the L.0.S.S.A. finals. Paula Haugen had 2 points while Patti Thompson and Melanie Bruce scored singles. The final score Port 66, Donevan 36. Juniors The junior contest was one of the most exciting of Port Perry basketball this year or any year. The game started evenly and the end of the first period the score was tied 10-10. Port pulled ahead a little at the half which ended 22-18. In the third quarter both teams added twelve points to their score, 34-30. In the fourth quarter Port started falling behind. Done- van was ahead by three points with a minute remain- ing. Port ran up and down the floor frantically. They were down by a basket with 3 seconds left in regulation time. Port had the ball out of bounds just inside the ten second line. Abraham threw the ball in bounds to Brendon, she in turn looked to he basket then passed off to Kelly Steele who was down on the baseline. Steele shot the ball from 25 feet away with less than a second remaining. The ball sailed threw the air, the buzzer Blackstock public meeting (From page 13) falling on the concrete floor. Mr. Goss told the meeting there 'is no way" the Board would try to put in bleachers on the south side as there is not enough room and they would interfere with fire exit routes. This explanation was accepted. Aside from dealing with the specific requests made by Minor Hockey, Mr. Goss stressed at the meeting that the arena is a multi-purpose facility for hockey, skating and curling, and because of its size and age there is no way it can be brought up to standards to totally satisfy the wishes of all the groups who use it. Mr. Goss outlined the ERR RRR 3 a budget for 1981 for the arena, stating the operation will be close to the anticipated deficit of $7000, which is picked up by the Township. The total budget this year is $42,575. Rental rates for this season range from a pre- mium of $32.50 per hour to a low of $25 per hour for the skating club, Minor Hockey and the Curling Club. There had been some confusion over whether Blackstock Minor Hockey would join the Ontario Hockey Association this season, and Mr. Allen clarified this by saying it will not be part of the OHA this year as many parents did not want the added expense of driving children to play out of town games. He did say that some exhi- bition matches with out-of- town teams have been lined up for this coming season. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and Ward 4 councillor John Wolters were both in attendance at the meeting Thursday night and Mayor Taylor explained that the operation of the two Town- ship arenas is left entirely to the respective boards with- out interference from council. Mr. Allen said there will probably be about 80 youngsters enrolled in the Minor Hockey programs this season and play will get underway this week. XXX X¥XXXXXXXX WATER STREET - PORT PERRY (Across from Ball Diamond - Beside Sportsland) XX NX NN ENN NNN NNN NN sounded, the gym was dead silent, the shot went in. The crowd went crazy, Donevan was in awe at Steele's shot. This was the first overtime of the year. Unfortunatly, Donevan went on to win in the three minute overtime, 47-46. Even though they lost to a lesser opponent, the team felt good about the come- back. Top scorer for Port was Sophie Brendon who shot in 22 points. Jackie Abraham, Judy Brinkman and Kelly Steele each had 6 points a piece. Lee Ann Barkley ended the game with a basket. Top scorer of the game was Marianne Corrigan who scored 25 points for the Donevan squad. Midgets The midget game was also a heart breaker. Port did not score in the first quarter. Donevan scored 5 points. In the second part of the half the girls were still having problems putting . the ball in the basket. The half ended 84. The team came back in the second half. The third period ended 10-8 for Donevan. It was a good close match the rest of the game. Donevan ended up on top though 18-14. Rebel scorers .were Janice Jack- man, Kelly Raines, Heidi Spannbaur and Gerry MacDonald: who had five, four, three and two points respectively. Special mentions go out to Karen Tomchishon who played a strong defensive game. The final score was Donevan 18, Port Perry 14. Volleyball The junior and senior boys volleyball teams travelled to Pickering last Thursday, October 29 for the L.0.S.S.A. West tournament. Both teams qualified for L.0.S.S.A., which will be played this week. The Rebels played each team once in regular play, then the top six made the playoffs, top two had bys into the semi finals. Seniors The Port seniors played Pickering first. They were defeated handily. They looked as if they were ready to fold. The squad then went on to demolish Harwood S.S. 15-0. Port still looked down. They then went on to pound Durham Christan 15-3. The boys were starting to gain their confidence. Dunbarton edged Port 15-11 in a good effort. The Rebels fifth game was against Henry Street. Port soundly beat them 15-8. This was the turning point in the tournament. Port knew they must win, they were down to Ajax 8-0. The squad called time out and got themselves turned around. They went on to win 16-14. Even after being down 14-10 Port still fought back. The boys were now into the play- offs even if they lost to Anderson, (which they did). The Rebels were fifth at the end of regulation play. The first team Port played was Henry Street in the quarter finals. Port was losing to the Hawks 6-0 but ended up sweeping them two games straight in long grueling contests. Port then went into the semi finals and were matched up against the defending champions, Dunbarton. Dunbarton had not lost a game all day and Port was the only team to even score 11 points against them. The Rebels were big underdogs. Only top 3 teams made L.0.S.S.A. Port fell behind again in the first game and never could catch up. In the second game Port put forth a great effort and won, surprisingly enough. In the third and final game of the match Port again fell behind, after long rallies Port went on to upset Dunbarton in the hour plus marathon. The team played maghnificiently and just out- hustled and outlasted them. In the finals Port was beat by a one man show of Anderson. The team knew that they had qualified for L.0.S.S.A. and that Ander- son had an hour to rest. Port was just too worn down from previous matches. The team looks forward to L.0.S.S.A. at Durham College and will be gunning for Anderson. The other squad which qualified was Pickering. The juniors also qualified for L.0.S.S.A. by placing third. Cross Country The cross-country team; Kelly West, Christine Bower and Scott Branton ran in the C.0.S.S.A. meet last week. None of the three qualified but a good showing was put forth for Port Perry High School. Soccer The Port Perry High School junior soccer team played two games last week. They defeated Ajax 3-0 in a great effort to take the title of L.0.S.S.A. West Champions. The team then travelled to Donevan for the L.0.S.S.A. championship on Friday. The Rebels did not play as well as they would like to and in turn lost in an exciting 3-2 count. The Port goals were scored by Andrew Goss and Dave Rodych. Mr. Westlake and the boys will be in the C.0.S.S.A tournament this Saturday. _-- Sal™ > we JUNIOR "C" HOCKEY - Scugog Arena - Port Perry - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8th ) Bewdley Rangers [1] © VS. ! a Port Perry MoJacks i 8 ADMISSION: Adults $1.50; cAmETIME: h] 7:30P.M. | f Students - $1.00; Children-50* Ap Wnggp---- | ee ee ™ nc HOME COMFORT For All Of Your PETROLEUM REQUIREMENTS and 24 Hour Complete Heating Service in Port Perry EMERGENCY SERVICE Day or Night - Phone 985-2572 Furnaces - Air Conditioning - Boilers - Air Cleaners - Humidifiers ACCC ICACIC » opm [an [ape [apn [on 0 ICICLE » | we | ake [ake [ah [he [ah [ he [he Ve [als [ks [de [he [lo [oe [ IC ICCC IC ON [ i LJ hod k [ud -- --- p-- 25535250525252 .
