Tragic car crash claims four young lives Funeral serviceds were to be held today November 3 for three Scugog Township teen-agers who died in a tragic car accident late Friday evening on Durham Road 2, three miles north of Port Perry. Services for the fourth victim of the two car érash, 24-year old Larry Durward of RR 5, Sunderland, were held Monday afternoon in Sunderland. Two persons who survived the head-on crash, remained Monday afternoon in hospital in Toronto, one in critical and the other in stable condition. The three Scugog Town- ship teen-agers who lost their lives Friday evening are Christopher A. Vehof of RR 1, Blackstock, who had his 18th birthday just two weeks ago; Linda Jewell, 16, of 139 Simcoe Street, Prince Albert; and Lewis Trevor Kennedy, 15, of 146 Simcoe Street, Prince Albert. Mrs. Susan Durward, 21, wife of the deceased man, was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto - with multiple injuries and her condition Monday was described as critical. Bruce Jewell, 13, of Simcoe Street in Prince Albert and brother of Linda Jewell, is in Sick Childrens Hospital with serious leg and arm injuries and his condi- tion is described as stable. The accident about 11:00 PM Friday evening on a straight stretch of highway has sent shock waves through Scugog Township and one police officer on the scene described it as the worst he has ever seen. Firefighters from the Port Perry Unit of the Scugog Department were called to the scene of the accident to use the Jaws of Life to free the victims from the wreck- age. Nursing homes will go after 20 extra beds Private nursing homes in Port Perry and Uxbridge will be submitting proposals to the provincial Health Ministry to provide 20 additional nursing home beds in either of these two communities. And Jim Marlow, chair- man of the Board at Port Perry Hospital, said last week the board is interested in looking at the proposal. The Health Ministry announced last week that 60 additional nursing home beds will be provided in Durham Region, 40 of them in the Oshawa-Whitby area and 20 in the Uxbridge-Port Perry area. Mr. Hospital Board has an expressed an initial interest and will examine in detail the proposal specifications and attend an information meeting to be held November 16 with Health Ministry officials in Toronto. "It may not go any further than this, but the Board is Marlow said the - interested," said Mr. Marlow. He said the hospital does not have any extra space at this time for additional beds, but the Board has submitted a plan for expansion of out- patient and emergency room facilities to the Health Ministry which has not yet made a ruling. Mrs. Edna Goss, director of the privately owned Community Nursing Home in Port Perry, told the Star last week the Home will be submitting a proposal for 20 beds. Mrs. Goss said currently there is a long waiting list (six months on average) for a bed at the 75 beds home on Lilla Street. A spokesman for the 80 bed Daheim Nursing Home in Uxbridge, also privately owned, said it would also be submitting a proposal for the 20 extra beds in this area.
