At the October 21 meeting in Whitby, council turned thumbs down on a motion to examine a system used in the City of Toronto where a ~~ citizens committee makes recommendations on how "much councillors should be - paid. Oshawa councillor John Aker summed up the feeling of most councillors when he said "we are elected people and our prime function is to make decision. Some of them are tough decisions, but we (council) are supposedly intelligent and I don't want to see an appointed body making these decisions for us. 12] Oshawa councillor Mike Armstrong, also opposed to the motion to examine the citizens committee put it more bluntly: "If you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen. I don't want anybody to advise me on this matter' (of council salaries). The motion to study the citizens committee in Toronto came two weeks after Durham council voted not to grant itself any raise in pay this year. Whitby councillor Tom That time of the year This was the scene in mary parts of Scugog Township as residents took advantage of the fine ~~. weather to get rid of the last of the leaves before the snow flies for good. The burning leaves left a haze of smoke over Port Perry by late Sunday afternoon. Edwards, who proposed that Durham study the Toronto citizens committee, said such a committee would give councillors the advantage of canvassing a wide number of people on the 'issue of pay raises. "We should at least have a look at how the Metro Citizens Committee works," he stated. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor expressed similar feelings when he said: "I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a report about the committee. We can see all the pros and cons and make a decision whether we want this kind of committee here." However, the recommen- dation went down to defeat easily. On the same issue of pay raises for members of council, a second motion, calling for councillors to receive $20 per meeting for committee work other than regular committees of council, also went down to a sound defeat. Durham councillors sit on such committees as Childrens Aid, the Health Unit, Conservation Authori- ties, and receive no extra remuneration, although members of the public on many of these boards and committees do receive a per meeting stipend. " Members of Durham council currently earn almost $14,000 per year over and above what they receive as members of the council in their respective municipali- ties. There was a lot of publicity two weeks ago when the matter of a council pay hike was on the agenda and a report showed Durham.. councillors are currently the highest paid of any regional municipality in Ontario. The speed at which the two motions last week went down to defeat made it obvious Port Perry Star ADVERTISING DEADLINE ALL ADVERTISING: Monday 12 Noon YOU HEN AND OUR NEW LIBRARY! (c.)ABook Club." In fact, when the first two motions got no support last week, a third motion, calling for council salary increases to be pegged to the increases granted Durham staff members, was quickly with- « drawn from the agenda by Pickering councillor Laurie Cahill, one of the originators. In withdrawing the notion, he did not say whether he will re-introduce it at a later date when the atmosphere around the council table cools down. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 4, 1981 -- 3 Toronto resident loses arm, foot in farm mishap A 47 year old Toronto resident lost his left arm and right foot Sunday morning when he became caught in a corn picker while working at his farm near Sunderland. Anthony DeBruin of 347 Hillsdale Ave., Toronto, was alone in the field when the machine became jammed with corn husks. He left the machine running while trying to dis- lodge the husks. His arm was severed below the elbow and right leg badly crushed at the knee. His foot was later amputated at the Toronto General Hospital. Mr. DeBruin's wife found her husband after she noticed the machine had not moved for a while. Members of the Port Perry Fire department were called to use the Jaws of Life to free the victim from the machine. He was taken to Port Perry Hospital and then transferred to Toronto General where his condition is described as stable.
