November 11,1981 - 36 Pages * Durham-York MPP Ross Stevenson says he is satis- fied with the way the Provincial government has, handled the announcement and pending purchase of 25 per cent of Suncor Inc. for $650 million. STEVENSON . Mr. Stevenson, who re- tained the Durham-York riding for the Conservatives by a wide margin in the election last March, told the Star on Friday he believes the deal will be a good one for Ontario over the long term. And he scoffed at charges last week from the Opposi- tion parties that the Govern- ment is holding back details about the purchase. "I don't think the Opposi- tion has all that much to complain about at this time," said Mr. Stevenson. He said although the announcement to purchase 25 per cent of the Suncor Shares has been made, the final details are still being worked out and the sale will not close until the end of this month, or later. '*There is nothing unusual about this. It is the same with any major purchase. I respect the fact the Govern- ment can't disclose the details until all the negotia- Proposals coming soon for § tions are complete," said Mr. Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson added "from the information I have, the purchase looks all right to me." The fact the Government has not released details about the purchase and how However, Dave Garrow, président of Garrow Auto- mobile which purchased Port Perry Chrysler in Manchester a couple of months ago, said that so far there has not been too much reaction on the part of potential car buyers. "Maybe this will help pick things up. If the rebate doesn't stir people to buy now I don't know what will," he stated. Mr. Garrow said he has about 12 1981 models on the lot which qualify for the buyer sales tax rebate plan, and he said that interest rates have been killing the new car market in recent months. He suggested however that since the rebate only applies to new 1981 models, the sale of 1982 models on the lot could be hurt. Calling the rebate plan a 'temporary expedient," Mr. Gray said he finds "it hard to accept that it just applies to 1981 models." - . He said he currently has about 30 models on the lot However, the Government ended debate by invoking closure and the motion passed 6140. . Mr. Stevenson defended ° the Government's action in closing debate. "It is my view that we were in a situation where the Liberals were purposely holding up pay cheques and payment to social agencies, and they would not have been paid," he said. He said in a sense it was a form of blackmail. The announcement to (Turn to page 3) hamlet water problems Residents of Manchester will probably find out in the next few weeks what kinds of alternative systems could solve their contaminated well problems, but it is not likely that any remedial action can be taken before the end of this winter. The residents of the com- munity just west of Port Perry have been having problems with their wells for several years, due partly to contamination from winter salt spread on roads in the: area. George Trewin, municipal and private abatement manager, for the Ministry of the Environment Central Region, told the Star last Friday that a consultant's report outlining the various ways of correcting the well problems in Manchester has been completed and reviewed by the Ministry, and is now in the process of being reviewed financially. Mr. Trewin said his ministry is waiting a decision on whether provin- cial grants for new private wells in the community can be applied to a new communal. water supply system. "I hope we will have an answer pretty soon, maybe in the next two or three weeks," he said. The Environment Ministry has agreed to pay 75 per cent of the cost of providing new individual wells in the community. The review at the moment is to determine if that money can be applied (Turnto page 3) which qualify for the sales tax rebate. Bryce Philp, president of Philp Pontiac-Buick called the plan an 'ideal way" to move the 1981 inventory, and said he has noticed some increased consumer interest since the plan was announ- ced a few days ago. He said sales have been slow over the past few rebate scheme, but.... months and his dealership has about 30 models which qualify. The rebate applies to 1981 vehicles (new) purchased - between November 6 and 28 and delivered prior to December 5. When the plan was announced, Jim Souch of (Turnto page 2) Let's hope fora mild December Barring a series of severe winter storms between now and the end of December, it looks like the 1981 Scugog Township Roads budget will be right on target. Roads superintendent Ron MacDonald told council Monday afternoon, he is confident his department will meet its $1,169,000 annual budget for 1981. "Unless we get some very bad weather in December, the budget will be on target," he told council. a. tan A Silver Cross Mother Silver Cross Mother, Mrs. V.
