parade held in Blackstock CRO ANA RSE SOS ER) After a Remembrance Day service held in the Blackstock Recreation Centre on Wednesday, November 11, participants paraded to the Cenotaph for the laying of wreaths and a two Tinute silence. Above, John Maw of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419 Port Perry salutes to his comrades after laying the wreath in their remembrance. M.P.P. Ross Stephenson, Mayor Jerry Taylor and councillor John Wolters can be seen in the background. District Commander guest speaker at Branch 419 banquet by Jack Rashotte It is an extreme pleasure to be here this evening and bring you greetings 'from provincial command. For more than sixty years Canada's war veterans have maintained a powerful presence and influence in the affairs of our country. Through our national organization The Royal Canadian Legion, in which your branch has played a vital part, we have fought for a fair deal for the disabled and handicapped veteran their independents. We have watched over the nation's moral and social values and more than any other groun the Legion has kept alive the: memory of our fallen comrades, with a sense of patriotism when these responsibilities have been diluted by new attitudes and modes. There have been hard times and good times over the years. Many of you have worked towards the survival of branch no. 419 . until you have achieved the fine place you now occupy. You have also achieved a real atmosphere of comrade- ship which I am sorry to say is lacking in some branches. I am sure the community is proud of your accomplish- ments over the years as other communities are justly proud of their Legion branches. They should be because members of these branches across Canada have made us what we are today. The Legion is hockey, baseball, lacrosse, track and field, almost every sport imaginable. It is also citizen- ship, public speaking, essay contests and bursaries. Across Canada the Legion sponsors 5400 separate youth programs with over half a million youngsters involved. Air cadets for instance account for over 6,000 boys and girls jn 375 squadrons, 12,500 boys take part in Legion uts and Cubs, in making it the largest sponsor of each ongst service organizations. Legion low rental housing for senior citizens grows at such a rate that figures soon become outdated. At last count there were in excess of 4,000 units valued at over 70 million dollars. We donate to meals on wheels, kidney machines, wheel chairs and crutches. From hockey rinks to Blood Donor Clinics, the list is endless. DE How many of the general public are aware of these Legion activities? Very few I am sorry to say because we do not publicize our activi- ties the way we should. Our provincial president, Comrade Larry Keen, has a very important motto 'Shout It Out" so the public will know. I would be remiss if I did not say a lot of what we should be shouting about would not be possible without our ladies auxiliaries. These ladies are unique in that. nearly all the money they raise is donated to worthy causes such as bursaries $108,000, funds like heart, cancer, T.B. seals, etc. $156,547, veterans welfare - $101,000. If branches can be classed as worthy causes - they were the recipients of $2,263,000. = These figures are for the (Turnto page 12) 7 PORT PERRY STAR ~~ Wed., November 18, 981 -- 7 Remembrance Day service, THe eI LCC TARE 1 -" Li Ns ids os Ai LEE T This year's Remembrance Day parade was lead for the first time by a colour party consisting of three Legion Ladies Auxiliary members.
