"standings But the memory of this remarkable season will last a long time for the ten young players and their coach Eric Fletcher. ' 'The CHS squad, represent- "ing the smallest high school (about 110 students) finished among the top four teams of all the schools in Durham Region, most of which have ten timeg the number of students at CHS. And it took a 28-26 over- time win by Pickering High School last Friday afternoon in the Lake Ontario Schools semi-finals to put an end to the season for the gutsy squad from CHS. Had the CHS girls been able to hang on for a win, they would have advanced to the LOSSA final on Saturday against Uxbridge, the team which beat Pickering for a spot in the COSSA play-off. For a while Friday, it seemed like CHS was going to battle its way into the LOSSA final as the players opened up a 12 point lead over Pickering. But the team ran into foul trouble late in the game and Pickering kept the pressure on to tie the score and force the over- time. Guard Carol Lewerentz had a hot scoring hand for CHS with 15 points, while Tena Wolters clicked for five, Julie Bryant 4 and CathyPaisley 2 points. The team went through the regular season play with six wins and three losses, good enough for a second place finish in the ten team Double A East league. This is just the second season that CHS has com- peted in inter-school basket- ball, and the record this season is all the more re- markable as last year the team failed to win a game. Coach Eric Fletcher said there are several reasons why the team was successful this year. Several of the girls gained valuable experience last year and the first year players had a solid ground- ing from the basketball pro- gram at Cartwright public school. J. CHS 'has no gymnasium and the team held its pract- ice sessions and home games in the gym at Cartwright Public Shcool. - Obviously there was a lot of disappointment on the team when Pickering pulled out the overtime victory, but the success over the season can be added to the long list of accomplishments of CHS. B® Eagles hand MoJacks two straight losses by John B.McClelland .-The Bowmanville Eagles showed the Port Perry MoJacks just why they are at the top of the Junior C this ~~ year. Eagles and MoJacks . played back-to-back week- end games with the Eagles edge and missed a couple of decent scoring chances as they looked for that all- important first goal which just never came. A couple of defensive lapses early in the second period increased the Eagle lead to 3-0 as Randy and Tony Oxley could not pull the trigger after work- ing himself into the clear. But mostly the MoJacks were stymied by strong back checking and a rugged defense that made virtually no mistakes; The game was tame bi ay iE, ; winning both and outscoring --MacDonald and Lorne Fin- compared to Bowmanville - CARTWRIGHT High School girls midget basketball team came within an the MoJacks by 13-1 margin. The Shut-out loss marked the first time this season MoJacks have been kept off the score sheet, and Eagles did it with a.cool efficiency. The two losses brought the MoJacks back to earth with through the third, Dana Peebles finished off a nice _three way passing play to give Eagles the 4-0 lead. Lovering could not be faulted on: any: of the Eagles goals, and in fact kept his team in the game with some 'timely 'and difficult stops. In the Eagle net, Craig German came up with the big stops when necessary, taking just nine penalties and all four Eagles goals came with the teams at full strength.
