Agricultural Representative 4-H MEMBERS RECEIVE AWARDS 4-H Agricultural members in Durham East received recognition and awards at the Annual Awards Luncheon on Nov- ember 21st at Maple Grove United Church. Following a delicious meal served by the Maple Grove U.C.W. Chairman, Don Welsh announced the winners of the various awards and called on the sponsors to present the various awards. The Spruceholme Charol- ais Award was presented to Lynn McLaughlin of Nestle: ton for top junior in the %H Beef Club. Jeff Caswell of Newtonville won the Locust Cottage Farm award as the top. senior in the 4H Beef Club. Janne Tamblyn of Qrono won the Ontario Farm Safety Association Award for top member in the Durham 4H Home and Farm Safety Club. The Gladibrae Farm Trophy awarded to the top 4H Junior Dairy member was won by Brian Van Camp of Blackstock. - Krista McHolm of Welcome was the winner of the Canada Permanent Trust award as _ Dairy. section top member in the Hope Calf Club. : Bruce Brown of Newcastle "was the big winner in-the taking the Durham Milk Committee Trophy as top Senior 4H Dairy member. In addition, Bruce was awarded the Durham Holstein Club Award and the James T. Browir Memorial Trophy for being top 4H Dairy club member. Kevin Taylor, Enniskillen, as top member in the 4H Sheep Club was awarded the Toronto-Dominion Bank (Bowmanville Branch) Award. The Jim Coombes, Thistle Valley Award for top Market Lamb went to Debbie Van Camp of Black- stock. Brian Van Camp, Black- stock won the Durham East Pork Producer's Award as top member in the 4H Swine Club. Murray Greenwood of Orono won the Ceresdale Fertilizer Award as top . member in the 4H Horse Club. The Bowmanville Veter- _inary Clinic Award to the top member in the 4H Veterin- ary Club was won by Bruce Brown. John Green of Black- stock was awarded the Ceresmore Farms Award as top member in the 4H Field Crops Club. Disability pensions increased for veterans Disability pensions paid to veterans and their survivors will rise 12.2 per cent on January 1st, the Honourable Bennett Campbell, Minister of Veterans Affairs, ann- ounced today. The increase in benefits will reflect the rise in the Consumer Price Index. Mr. Campbell said that approximately -134,000 disa- bility pensioners: and their surviving "dependents will recélve the improved benéfits. In addition to those eligible under - the Pension Act, monthly pensions are also received by those qualifying under the Civilian War Pen- sions - and Allowances Act and the Compensation for Handicraft Guild meet by Jo Dowson The Louise Patterson Handicraft Guild held their annual pre Christmas Pot Luck Luncheon on Wed. Dec. 10th in St. John's Church Hall. The food was plentiful and delicious and showed that cooking is just another of the many skills of our members. There was a gift exchange of hand made articles, these were varied and were rec- eived with great delight. During a short business meeting it was decided that former Prisoners of War Act. The increase means that on January 1, the standard widow's pension will go from $608.60 a month to $682.85. A married veteran with a 100 per cent disability pension will receive $1138.04 a month instead of the present pay- ment of $1014.33 a month. A 50 per cent disability pen- sioner, married with two dependent children, will in future receive $671.47, up from $598.48 a month. Mr. Campbell said that the indexed increases in pen- sions, which are adminis-" tered by the Canadian Pen- sion Commission, will cost a" total of $65 million. our next regular meeting on Jan. 13th, 1982 would begin at 10 A.M. and be a day long get together with each member bringing her current project to work on. Members are asked to bring their lunch and a cup of tea will be provided. Come and join us, we'll all get some work done and will be able to exchange ideas and help if needed. Krista McHolm was presented with the North Hope Farm Supplies Award as top member in the 4H Horticulture Club. Following presentation of Club Awards, there were Special Achievement Awards presented. Winners in the 4H Judging Competi- tion were-as follows: 1. C.N.E. Shield - Top Novice - Brent McLaughlin Nestleton; 2. Royal Bank Award - Top Junior Dave Brown, Newcastle; 3. E.A. Summers Memorial - Top Senior, Walt Vice, Black- stock; 4. Federation of Agri- culture -top Team - 4H Dairy Club, Nancy Tamblyn, Dave Brown and Bruce Brown. Special Achievement Cer- tificates for projects completed were presented as follows: 1. Six or more projects: Jill Coombes, Ralph DeJong, Marilyn Green, Murray Greenwood, Ann Hoogeveen, Lynn McLaughlin, Tim Sikma, Brian Van Camp and Debbie Van Camp. 2. Twelve or more projects: Peter Coombes, Kevin Taylor and Walt Vice. 3. Eighteen or more projects: Janet Brown. 4H members who are completing 4H and have over 18 projects receive a special certificate as follows: 1. Janet Brown - 19 projects; 2. Craig Larmer - 22 projects; 3. Wayne Yellowlees - 22 projects. Volunteer leaders are the backbone of 4H and certifi-_ cates for leaders were presented as follows: 1. First Year Leader. The Ted Buttery Memorial Scholarship awarded to an outstanding 4H member 'in their first year of a Univer- sity or College Program was presented by Dave Buttery to Valerie Van Camp of Blackstock. The 1981 winners of the Durham Milk Committee Ottawa Trip are: Norman 4-H members receive awards at Luncheon DeJong, Nestleton; Valerie Van Camp, Blackstock; Lawrence Van Camp, Black- stock and Pam Gray, Garden Hill. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Bow- manville and Orono Branches have presented watches to the outstanding 4H Boy and Girl. These awards go to members who, during their time in 4H have shown outstanding ability and sound leadership skills, both in and out of 4H. Rick Mountjoy of the Bowman- ville Branch, presented the awards to Janet Brown, Newcastle and Craig Larmer, Blackstock. Our congratulations to all 4H members for their achievements in 1981.
