January 6, 1982 ow Sports J Oldtimers prepare for World Hockey Cup Six members of the Uxbridge Black Hawk old- timers squad are from the Port Perry area, and they are looking forward to competition in the World Oldtimers championship tournament which gets Pacers grab tournament victory by Hillis Wilbur On Dec. 28 the Grant Menzies P-~c:'s won the annual Co.nco Metal and Plastics Midget Tourna- ment. In the first game they played Haliburton and won 3 - 0 with some outstanding goaltending by Ken Harman. Scoring for the Pacer's were Chico Vaz assisted by Mark Goreski and Ray Meisner - Mark Goreski assisted by Chico Vaz - Dave Kemp "assisted by Jeff Johnstone. In the second game they played Hamilton and came out on top 5 to 2. Scoring for The Port Perry Midget Pacers capfured gold medals in the annual tournament held December 28 at the Scugog Arena, and did the same thing later in the a a RINT SS 2 BT kr underway next month in Toronto with more than 100 teams taking part. Six members of the Black Hawk squad are from the Port Perry area: Jim Bur- nett, Peter Morris, Garnet Warriner, Bob Bradbury, Gary Geer and Jerry Luke. This will be the first time the world tournament has been held in Canada and the first time the Black Hawks have competed in the event. The team is now gearing up for the competition with tournament play and exhibit- ion games against some of the tougher oldtimers clubs. There will be 44 teams from Ontario and inter- national representation is expected from the United States, Finland and other European countries. Pre- vious World Cups have been hosted by Amsterdam, Tokyo, Zurich, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Edinburgh. The teams will be seeded into eight divisions and each team will be guaranteed three games starting Feb- ruary 15. The Black Hawks expect they will be seeded in assisted by Vaughan McKee - Jamie Lane assisted by Dean Smith and Chico Vaz - Vaughn McKee assisted by Chico Vaz and Jamie Lane. Chico Vaz was chosen most valuable player in the championship game, it was a good effort by all of the dy On Dec. 30 the Pacer's played in the Uxbridge Tournament and came home with the championship trophy. In the first game they played Markham and won 4 to 2. Scoring for the Pacers were Vaugh McKee assisted by Mike Dickson - Vaughn McKee again assisted by Mark Goreski, Jamie Lane then scored 2, one unassisted and the second one assisted by Chico Vaz and Vaugh McKee. In the second game they faced off with our old rival's Uxbridge and after a good pep talk by Coach Doug Scott came out skating and hitting and won8to3, it was tied3-3 with 6 min Jeft in game when Port scored 5 unanswered goals to win. Scoring for the Pacer's was Jeff Johnstone 2 goals and 1 assist - Chico Vax with 2 goals and 3 assists - Jamie Lane 2 goals and 1 assist, Vaugh McKee 1 goal and 3 assists - Mike Dickson 1 goal, others getting assists were Howard' Lee with 2, Ray Meisner with 1. In the championship game they the D Division which could place them against teams from communities like Orillia, Penetang or Port Hope. Team members are taking the competition seriously. For many of them, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take part in a world tournament, as Canada will not have the chance to host the event again for seveal years. Oldtimer hockey enjoys an immense popularity. The cut-off age is- 35, and slap shots and body checking are banned. However, in the heat of competition, the body con- tact rule sometimes is for- gotten. And anyone who thinks . oldtimers hockey is a bunch of guys with pot bellies out for a friendly skate is mis- taken. Many of the players work hard off the ice to. stay in shape, and while the pace may be a few steps slower, the level of skill on the ice is high. The Black Hawks, formed six years ago, have com- peted in Canadian Oldtimers championships: and twice have played in international - matches in Florida. played Woodville and won it 5 to 3. Ken Harman and Paul Goreski shared the goaltending. In league play on Dec. 21 the Pacers bombed Picker- ing 11 to 3. Scoring for Port was Jeff Johnstone 1 goal and 2 assists, Jamie Lane 4 goals and 2 assists, Ray Meisner 4 assists, Chico Vaz 2 goals and 3 assists, Mark Goreski 2 assists, others getting a goal a piece was Dean Smith, Greg Williams, Dave Kemp and' Vaughn McKee, getting assists was Dean Smith and Kevin Ferguson with 3 assists, On Dec. 22 they played Bow- manville where they came away with a 7 --1 victory. Scoring for Port were Jamie Lane with 3 goals and 1 assist, Mark Goreski with i d assists, Chico Vaz 1 goal an 2 assists, Kevin Ferguson 1 goal and" 2 assists, Jeff Johnstone 1 goal, and an assist, Dean Smith with a goal.
