a SE SEA EX TR SRE ov a rt nT i ¢ Ke Hi DE ral --r nie Cals =i or AC atin SE ARR TTS by John B McClelland It was a rough weekend for new head coach Gary Elliott to. take his position behind the bench of the Port Perry MoJacks. Hampered by injuries to a couple of key players, MoJacks dropped a pair of weekend game to two of the top teams in the Junior C loop. On New Years Day, Bow- manville Eagles paid a visit to the Scugog Arena and the first place team came away with a rather easy 7 - 2 win over the MoJacks. And Sunday night, the Cobourg Cougars cashed in on Port Perry penalties to double the MoJacks 8 - 4. Elliott, who took over from Don McBeth last week, is from Oshawa and played a season of Junior C hockey in Port Perry several years ago when the team was called the Flamingos. He is 29. With = Tim Thompson already out of action with knee problems, the MoJacks lost leading scorer Todd - 'Wilbur early in the Bowman- ville game, and. the lack of fire power was evident as the team could muster little scoring punch. Eagles built a 7-- 0 lead before Mike Geer jammed in a rebound at 13:31 of the final period. Carl Durward added the MoJacks final goal in the last minute of play when he snapped a hard wrist shot past Craig German from about 25 feet out. MoJacks were outshot in the game 41 - 20, which was a pretty good indication of the wide margin in play enjoyed by the first place Eagles. Wilbur had to be helped from the ice in the second period with a back injury, which forced him to sit out the game against the Cougars. He's expected to return to action by the week- Sports chaplain to visit Mel Stevens Chaplain for - the Toronto Maple Leafs and Argonauts will be visiting Port Perry United Church' Sunday, Jan. 10 at 7;00 P.M. COUGAR GAME Against the Cougars on Sunday night, MoJacks jumped into a quick 2 - 0 lead in the span of 1:25 as Bob Wildman scored at the 50 second mark after Brian Mikkelsen did some good work to control the puck inside the Cougar blue line. Jamie Bird made it 2 - 0, taking a nice centering pass from Dave Canning, and MoJacks looked like they were off and running. But at 2:59, Wayne Middle- ton took a tripping penalty, and the Cougars tied the score and got the go-ahead goal just four seconds after Middleton returned 'to the ice. At 5:36, Cobourg went ahead 4 - 2'when Rob West knocked a puck out of the air past a startled Ray Gibson. Middleton .was off for roughing at 6:15 when Richard Tryon was set up alone on Gibson's doorstep to give the Cougars a commanding 5 - 2 lead. But MoJacks - were not about to give up without a a -- as scrap and at 12:14 Dave Canning's persistence paid off as he dug the puck free in front of the Cobourg net. Mike Mitchell and Scott Heard drew assists on the play. Both teams had 18 shots on goal 'in the first period as MoJacks were getting some good scoring chances. But Cobourg went ahead 6 - 3 at 1:26 of the third with Scott Heard in the box for high sticking. And :a goal off a- scramble at 8:57 put the game out of reach for the MoJacks. The loss of the scoring punch of Wilbur and Thomp- son was high-lighted midway through the second when Cobourg took a series of penalties. Although the MoJacks were able to put pressure on the visitors, they were not able to get the puck past Mark Flesch who was coming well out of his net to cut down angles and block shots. Midway ip the third, Shawn Turland made it 8 - 3 on a clear breakaway after taking a long pass from inside the Cobourg blue line. The game got very chippy in spots with elbows and sticks flying high. Wildman got the final MoJack goal late in the game with Cougars playing two men short. Despite the loss, MoJacks seemed to be skating and moving the puck pretty well against the Cougars, who scored five of their goals on the power play. There were a lot of penalties called in this game which at times threat- ened to get out of hand. Cobourg goalie Mark Flesch likes to wander and it got him in trouble in the third when Jamie Bird creamed him against the boards behind the net with a legal check. A Cobourg defender then took a penalty on the play for wrestling Bird to the ice. ' MoJacks travel to Bewdley this Wednesday night, Jan. 6 for a must-win game against the Rangers. Heading into the final month of play, points are becoming crucial for the team in the standings. And MoJacks have a tough weekend coming up with back to back games against Lindsay Muskies on Friday and then home Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. January 6, 1982 -- 21 Dave Alexander, who played last season, has join- ed the team. He is a very tough player who likes to hit and his rugged style of play should help the MoJacks. He played in the Bowman- ville game, but a fight in the last five minutes meant an automatic game suspension so he missed the Cobourg match. There are currently six teams in the running for the final five play-off spots in the loop. With a dozen games left this month, MoJacks have a shot at 4th spot, which would put them against the 8th place team in the opening round of the play-offs. But if MoJacks finish 5th, they will MoJacks lose two weekend games could flip it into the net. It was one of the few good scoring chances for the MoJacks as they were doubled 8-4 by the Cougars, wha cashed in with five power play markers. meet first place Bowman- ville in the first round. However, if the team goes into a bad slump this month, MoJacks could end up miss- ing the playoffs altogether for the second year in a row. But if they can get the injured players back in the line-up, and continue to get strong performances from players like Bird, Wildman and Mikkelsen, their chances of grabbing a play- off spot are excellent. One key factor in the stretch drive will be penalties, and there are several players who will have to keep a lid on their red-hot tempers. and stay away from needless trips to the sin bin. *ANNOUNCEMENT* | hope the boy who broke into our cottage at Aldred's Beach, Scugog Island had a nice Christmas.
