(From pagel) have been getting their drinking water at a spring near Chalk Lake, several miles from Manchester. At the meeting Monday, Mayor Taylor told council the residents of the commun- ity are wondering why the hold-up in sorting out this problem which has been on- going for a number of years. He said he is receiving calls from Manchester PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. Janvary 13, 1982 -- 3 residents just about every week. "The ideal solution would be to run a municipal water line from Port Perry to Manchester, with residents - there paying for the hook-up charges," he told council. Beach water tests (From pagel) tests of the water. The Health Unit report points out a possible problem and there should be some kind of action, he suggested. In its report, the Health Unit says the. tests carried out last summer indicate "the quality of water for swimming at the beach is questionable." Arep from the Health Unit Guards want raise The five school crossing guards employed by Scugog Township want a raise in pay. Ken Murphy, acting as spokesman for the guards told council Monday" after- noon the present rate of $3.50 per hour is not enough. He asked for a raise to $6 per hour, and said "that is not too much for the work we do and the weather condi- tions." Port Perry guards work 15 hours per week, and receive a clothing allowance of $15 per month. Mr. Murphy said that in - Oshawa, guards are paid $5 - per hour and receive certain other benefits such as vaca- tion and relief service. Guards in Port Perry off work in an emergency situa- tion must find their own replacements and pay them out of their own pocket. Council took no action with the request, but members agreed that $3.50 is not suffi- cient pay. A decision on how much of a raise to grant the guards will be made during discussions for the 1982 Township budget. Council agreed, however, that the raise in pay will be made retroactive to January 1 of this year. New books 'at library New book arriving at the . Scugog Memorial Library are as follows: Accordian Man - Myron Floren; No Hiding Place -. The New York Times report on the hostage crisis; How to Play the Harmonica - S. Manus; The Diamond World - D. Koskoff; Lemon-Aid, New Car Guide - L. Edmon ston; Polly's Pointers - hints for making everything you own last longer - P. Fisher; Steam Trains of the World - B. Hayes; Living Well - the New York Times book of home design and decoration; Time Bomb - understanding the threat of Nuclear Power - C: Browne; Don't Bank on It - A. Granger; The Depres- sion Years - P. Mennill; The . Ways of My Grandmothers - B. Hungry Wolf. told the Star last week that there may not be a health problem with the water, but parents should be very cautious in allowing young children under six to swim in the water. While there were two high readings for water taken at the Port Perry beach, samples taken in June, July and August at other Scugog beaches showed much lower readings except at View Lake where the readings for a sample June 23 was 900. Manchester well problems But just who would pay is the problem. Piped water is a Regional responsibility and even if the Ministry of the Environment agreed to pay 75 per cent of the cost, Durham Region may not want to pick up the remain- der. Earlier this year, a test well was drilled on the Township property in Manchester and a line has been congected to the muni- cipal works garage there. An outside tap has been installed to allow residents to get drinking water, and apparently some are using this, rather than driving to the spring at Chalk Lake. 3CI0ICICICICICICICICICICICICICICICICD] - 3 3 * In Stock Quantities.
