Over 200 attend art show Over 100 paintings by local artists went on display Friday evening at the first Art Show staged by the Wagg Gallery on Queen Street in Port Perry. And more that 200 people toured the gallery and were impressed by the quality of the work. Many of the paint- ings on display depicted scenes of Scugog Township and the surrounding area. Gallery operator Harold Wagg was delighted with the response by the public, so much so that he is now working on plans for a second show, likely to be held this summer during the Western Weekend festivities. The paintings on display were the work of some 14 local artists. Mr. Wagg said he was unsure how the Show would be received by the public, but any fears he may have had quickly disappeared when he opened the doors at 6:30 Friday evening. Congratulations! Nestleton United Church On Sunday, March 21, with a good attendance Rev. John Smith used as his sermon topic for the 4th Sunday in Lent, 'The Lordship of Jesus -the Churcli"', a most mean- ingful message for the Lenten season. The minister told the children about the Organ and how important the different parts of the instrument were - even though very small - and brought out the point - of how -important small children are as well. In the choir a trio composed of - Bernice Mairs, Janice MacKenzie and Helen Vine sang "The Old Rugged Cross" - a general favourite of this season, coming up to Easter. Organist Gwen Malcolm led the choir in song. Nestleton Presbyterian Church On Sunday, March 21, worship service was held at the usual time 11 a.m. Rev. Had a little caper lately? Any news of interest would be welcomed. Ph. 986-4715. Close vote for more councillors (From page9) there should be an extra rep," he said. Both Scugog mayor Jerry Taylor and regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm opposed the motions to add extra reps from Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax. Councillor Malcolm said adding reps to the council will not make any difference to the municipalities in question, and will only add to the cost of Regional govern- ment. Regional councillors' presently are paid a salary of $13,980 plus expenses for mileage, conferences and expenses. They also have fringe benefit package for such things as OHIP cover- age and life insurance. A report released to regional council last week shows that Ajax with 25,000 people has just two reps on Durham council, or 6.7 per cent of the representation. The community has nine per cent of Durham's population. Whitby's population of 35,000 is 12.8 per cent of the Region, while its three reps - on the council are 10 per cent of the total. Oshawa, with 115,000 people has 41 per cent of the Durham population, while its 11 members on the council make up 36.7 per cent of the 30 members. In terms of rep by pop, it would appear that Scugog, Uxbridge, Brock and New- castle are all over- represented on the council. The three northern munici- palities have two reps on council, while Newcastle with a population of 31,000 has four reps on the council.
