March 24, 1982 ports Sweeps best of three final in two straight games C and B grabs'82broomball crown by Dave Dalton Broomball action drew to a close in Port Perry this past weekend when C&B won their second straight League Championship with a 5-1 win over Utica. Utica was out-played in the best of three finals as C&B took it two straight out- scoring Utica 11-3. This past Sunday the game started out with a lot of close checking and few good scoring chances with the best going Dave Dalton of the Port Perry Broomball Asso- ciation presents league trophy to C and B assistant captain Mark Lee after the team beat Utica Farm Sunday to sweep the best of three final in two games. to Utica when Jack Monsma rapped on the goal post on a shot from the point. Shortly into the second frame C&B got the scoring underway as Doug Scott shot from the point into a crowd in front which bounced in off Tim Ashbridge. Bruce Woodrow was credited with the next goal on an assist from Bill St. John. This one was also deflected in, but this time off of a Utica defender. Woodrow again scored on a clean set up from Ken Fraser to give C&B a 3-0 lead. Utica then netted their only marker when Chester Down fired one in off the far post on a set-up by Laval Paulin. That goal made up for when Mark Lee picked up a rebound in front of the Utica net after the initial shot by Rob Evans had been stopped. The final goal of the series came off the broom of Ron Redman after a 2 on 1 involving him and Woodrow. The score of the first game between these two teams in this series ended up a 6-2 win for C&B. From the onset of the first face off this one appeared as a high scorer when both teams potted two each in the first seven 'minutes. The main scoring through the play off was done by the C&B line of Rob Evans at centre flanked by Aldon Smith and Mike Mitchell who finished with 9,7, and 5 points each respectively. On Saturday, March 13, the East Lakeshore league hosted a tournament in Colbourne involving 13 teams from around the area with Port Perry represented by Utica Farm Equip. and Beacocks Hdwe. Due to the number of teams the first games were round robin with three teams in three divisions and four in the other. Utica won their two round robin games to enter the 'A' division semi which they handily won to enter the finals on Saturday night. In the final they met Oshawa Carlo's who came out winners with a 2-1 score. _ Beacock's had a little tougher time as they were in the four team division, ending up with two wins and one loss to the Carlo's thus nding them to the 'B' side. Here they met Trenton Merchants, who scored 5 goals in the last 10 minutes on route to a 6-1 win. The next tournament is in Oshawa April 3 for the men and Sunday April 4 for the ladies. The annual banquet and awards night will be April 17th at Nestleton Community Centre, see the ad in this paper for further details. Port Perry will send 35 to Ont. softball meeting The 60th Annual Ontario Amateur Softball Assoc. annual meeting will be held this weekend (March 26-27- 28) in Niagara Falls. Over 500 delegates will be on hand including one of the largest from Port Perry which will see over 35 delagates present. Local treasurer Jack Cook Jr. will be seeking his second term as OASA 2nd Vice President. Garry Venning local OASA convenor will be standing for an executive position. Donn Gray (Past president Port Perry Minor) has been appointed elections officer by the OASA president. He will supervise the voting procedures, ballot pick-up and counting the votes.OASA past pres. Vin Walker will conduct a minor softball panel on Saturday morning in Niagara. The past two seasons a minor committee meeting has been held in Port Perry. This years tourna- ment will be held in Jordon after the first two events were held in Port Perry. The presentation will be made by Rob Cooper, Garry McHugh and Wayne Venning. Also on the agenda will be a special presentation to Bill Harper of Port Perry. Bill will receive an outstanding service award for his many years of softball contribution and his great ability as a batter. The major item on the agenda " for the voting delagates will be the pro- posal to change the minor age 5 by increasing them all by one year. Other changes include adding a new series called mite (under 10 yrs.); tournament rules and equip- ment updating. The convention will be the biggest since 1972 in Niagara when the 50th annual was held. This also will be Port Perry minor softball's 20th year. Pee Wee A's against wall The first gante of the All- Ontario semi-finals between Alliston and the Port Perry Legion Pee Wee All Stars was played Saturday, Mar. 20 at Port Perry. In the first period Port Perry came out flying netting 3 goals. The boys were passing and shooting and keeping most of the play in the Alliston end. Goals were scored by Rob Baker assisted by Andrew Steel and Bob Goble, Brad Menzies assisted by Warren Geer, and. John Harman assisted by John Lally. At the 8 minute mark of the second period as the Port team started to lag, the Alliston team began to fly and scored 3 unanswered goals tying the score at the end of 2nd period. - In the third period again Alliston potted 2 more goals before -Port rallied with goals from Dave Burnett from Dave Culbert and Scott Feasby, and John Harman got his 2nd from Steve Durham and Brad Menzies to extend the game to a 10 minute overtime period. - Fast skating and end to end play paid off for the Alliston boys as they scored at 5:17 to win the game 6-5. Kevin Cearns Ports goalie played well keeping Port in the game. On Sunday, Mar. 21, Port Perry travelled to Alliston for the second game of the series, but came home defeated 6-4. Ports goals were scored by Brad Menzies, John Harman, Rob Goble, and Warren. Geer with assists going to John Harman and Rob Baker.
