Along with the fact that departments were able to meet the budget targets, Durham enjoys an operating surplus of $370,000 from 1981, and an additional $270,000 in supplemental taxes. And assessment figures have been revised upwards to five per cent from 3.5 per cent. The references to the "Election year budget" is verified by figures for the past several years which show that in 1980, for example, the net impact on: the ratepayer of the Region was 1.4 per cent. In 1978, the impact was 3.9 per cent. In 1981, the impact was 13.6 per cent, or a full per centage point above the rate of inflation. SCUGOG TOWNSHIP For Scugog, the Region will ask for a net levy this year of $1,214,189. The Town- ship will receive a density grant from the provincial government of $67,180 to be applied against the levy from the Region. Scugog's apportionment share of the total regional levy is 4.6 per cent. The formula and grants effect the net impact on the ratepayers of each munici- pality in Durham. The impact for Ajax is 10.3; for Newcastle 12.1, and for Ux- bridge 12.4 per cent. The mayors of these three muni- cipalities will meet with pro- vincial revenue officials in an effort to get more grants toreduce the impact on their ratepayers. Taxpayers in Scugog will not know what the total increase in their 1982 taxes will be until the Durham Board of Education and Scugog Township set their budgets in the next couple of weeks. The amount of taxes which go for Regional purposes usually adds up to about 25 per cent of the total tax bill for a property owner. Science Fair Winners 5 5 R.H.
