Games 215 and over: John Ganaraska River is place to watch the fish perform Excellent opportunities exist for the public to observe "fish aerobatics' as large, migratory rainbow trout move upstream through the Town of Port Hope, on their way to head- water spawning areas. Many thousands of trout negotiate the Ganaraska River rapids in Port Hope. The Ganaraska fish ladder, operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Port Hope, allows trout to bypass the Corbett Dam and reach the spawning areas in the upper river. The rainbow trout run usually reaches a peak on the Easter weekend. Fishing season on the Ganaraska River does not open until the last Saturday in April, to protect spawning trout. However, the harbour at Port Hope south of the CNR bridge is open all year for rainbow and brown trout fishing. Another special attraction this year in Port Hope is the second annual Ganaraska River Race (known locally as the "Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny"), to be held on April 3rd. This race, scheduled to precde the main fish run, should offer lots of fun for participants and spectators alike. For further information on the race, contact the Port Hope Chamber of Commerce at (416) 885-5519. WINTER WOOD Are you getting your money's worth when you buy fuelwood? If you are not familiar with the various ways fuelwood is sold you may be spending more than you think. Fuelwood may be de- scribed and-or purchased in various lots or sizes, in- cluding a full or bush cord, fractions of a cord, a "face" cord (not a legal description) tantra ® Thermo controlled air hal * Cobar msamg equ ¢ Feral opens + oii shane een dat' * Fedor. tnd snl bans # Fuel Gher weptaemens « egored © hile shop sobemcnd andior dest check a truckload or even by weight. What sellers call a "face . cord" may be8' x4' x 16" or 8' x4' x12", a difference of 10 cubic feet that you could be paying for. Try to buy your wood in fractions of a full cord such as a half cord, or a third cord, etc. Find out how long the wood has been cured. Only well dried wood should be burned to reduce creosote build-up in the chimney and provide max- imum burning efficiency. If you buy mixed hard- wood ask about the species content. Heavy hardwood such as maple, oak, beech, white ash and hickory pro- vide the best heating value for 'your dollar. Basswood and poplar are much less desirable because of their lower heating value. A given volume of basswood contains only about 60 per cent of the dry weight present in the same volume of hard maple. Many fuelwood users are buying their wood in 16' lengths, at a flat rate price, and doing the cutting and splitting themselves. This is usually a good way to buy and does provide some good exercise for the buyer. The things to remember are the volume of wood is approx- imate only; there may be hollow rotted logs in the pile, the wood is usually un- seasoned, so cutting and splitting should be done several months in advance of the cold weather seasons.
