2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed. March 31, 1982 ATS (sky od Well situation unresolved \ (From pagel) A consultants report shows the cost of running a line from Prince Albert to Manchester would be about $210,000. However, this does not include service connec- tion fees from the property line to each home, a cost estimated to be about $4000 per house. The same report shows the cost of drilling new wells for each home would be about $214,000. But even though the provincial government has agreed to pay for the actual new wells, it will not pay an estimated $28,000 in necessary engineering costs. And members of council were not pleased to learn that if this method is agreed to, the Township will have to assume the administration of the project. Consultants working for the "Environment = Ministry have identified 24 homes where the well water is contaminated by salt, plus three which have unaccept- able readings of nitrates. Many homeowners in Manchester have long ago given up drinking their well water, and some have said the water is so salty is has corroded pipes and applian- ces in their homes. The source of the contami- nation has been run-off from the winter salting operations on the provincial highways through the community west of Port Perry. The meeting Monday afternoon cleared up some questions about how to correct the problem, but raised several new ones as well. For example, will the Environment Ministry agree CLUB ANNRENE SATURDAY, APRIL 3rd Dance from 8:00 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. to Country. If the Ministry agrees to subsidize a piped system from Prince Albert, Durham Region assume operation of that system, and will homeowners want to pay the monthly Regional water bills? Would residents be char- ged the frontage fee by the Region? At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Jerry Taylor more or less summed up the feeling of council will « when He said "there is no point now in taking this issue to the residents of Manches- ter, because the first ques- tion they will ask is how much will it cost, and we still don't know that." However, there is one bit of good news for the resi- dents there. Tests on the well on the Township works department property showed the water is fine for drinking. As for when a decision can be made on which alterna- tive will correct the overall problem of contaminated wells, it appears as if that will not be done quickly. Captain Penney said the three cottages were quite close together, and from the extent of the flames when firefighters arrived on the scene, he said they have a good idea which cottage the fire started in. : He said furniture des- troyed in the fire includes what appears to be a grand piano. The cottages were owned by Jack Antony of Oshawa, James Mosher of Prince Albert and Clive Booth of Scarborough. This was the third major fire in Scugog this month.
