And, as might be expected, it was an emotional moment for Nancy Bryans of R.R. 1, Blackstock and Deanna Halligan of West Des Moines, Iowa. The story of this long and unusual friendship goes back 29 years when Mrs. Bryan was an 11 year old school girl living in Courtice. She submitted her name to the pen pals column of a maga- zine called "Wee Wisdom." Two years later, Mrs. Halligan who was growing up on a farm near a small town in Kansas, was looking at a copy of the magazine in the' library, and decided to write a letter. They have been regular correspondents ever since, and on March 23, Deanna and her husband Ken walked through the door of the Bryan home, much to the surprise of Nancy, who had no idea the visit had been arranged by her husband, Bob. "I knew who she was, immediately,"' Nancy told the Star in an interview last week. And Deanna said the same thing. JActually, Deanna had known for several months the visit was to take place, as Bob Bryans first made the arrangements last October. The surprise visit was part of the Bryans' 25th wedding anniversary wich they cele- brated March 15. The timing was perfect for Deanna, who teaches business at a high school near Des Moines. Last week was her mid-winter break. She flew with her husband to Toronto, was met at the , airport by Nancy's daughter Patti, who then drove them to the Bryan home. 'Nancy said she guessed that something was up last week when Bob came home from work a little early and asked her to put some music on the record player. A short while later, Deanna and Ken walked through the door. The first night they sat up til 3:00 a.m. talking and generally getting to know each other. During the last 29 years, they had talked on the phone on two occasions. They both agree the other in real life is pretty much as they expected, although Nancy did not expect Deanna to be as tall. Nancy still has that first letter she received in June, 1953, from Deanna, and they both got a chuckle reading it again.
