High Triple: Marg Lee - Juniors win one, lose two in Saturday event by Wendy Burton On Sat, April 17, the Sportsland Juniors played in their annual tournament. The Juniors first game was at 7 a.m. against Scar- borough. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Juniors suffered a huge loss, due to the loss of a valuable player. The players never gave up and tried to muster enthus- iasm. Qur second was at 12 against a good Warkworth team. The Juniors came up with a much improved game. Due to great goaltend- ing, were able to keep ahead of Warkworth. The Juniors got a 3-1 lead by the end of the first period. At the start of the second, Warkworth came back to tie the game. It remained a seesaw battle for the rest of the game. The Sportsland Juniors came up on top witha 7-6 victory to keep them. in the tourna- ment. Scoring for the Juniors were: Stephanie Butt 3 goals, 1 assist; Kelley Raines 2 goals; Jo-Anné Connors 1-goal, 1 assist; Brenda. Shepstone 1 goal; Tracey Olsen 1 assist; Kelly Storry 1 assist. Our third game at 4 p.m. was to decide who goes to the championship game at 6. The Juniors played a good team from Stayner. Stayner came out strong. The Juniors were a little tired and were just unable to put their game plan together. Stayner won the game 10-1 and advance to the championship. Scoring for Port Perry was: Kelley Raines, assist going to Kelly Storry. Thanks go to Heather Muir who came and played for us in goal. You did a great job. Oshawa got the jump by scoring three quick goals within 3 minutes before Port replied and were leading 6-2 after the first period. Port fought back within two goals but ran out of gas, the final score was 7-4 for Oshawa. Oshawa met Whitby in the final and beat them 7-2. Scoring on the day was our captain Rhonda White 7 goals, 3 assists; Janice Jack- man 4 goals, 1 assist; Cheryl Doherty 2 goals, 3 assists; Michelle Newell 1 goal; Sharon Ashmore and Wendy Burton each had 2 assists, while single assists went to Michelle Andrews and Tish Lefort. Earlier in the year the I.G.A. Belles represented Port Perry in the Central Ontario Regional 'B" Championships in Ajax where they came up against some tough opposition.
