In his report to the meeting held in Port Perry, June 28, Mr. Marlow said the hospital has appealed what he termed the "under-funding" to the provincial Health Ministry. The meeting was told that for the fiscal year ending March 31, the deficit for , Community Memorial was about $80,000 (on a total budget of $2.4 million). If the hospital is not successful in its appeal to the government for more funds, "the Board of trustees will have to re-assess the services presently being offered with a view to certain cut-backs," warned Mr. Marlow in his report. The meeting was told that operating deficits are a problem for hospitals right across Ontario, and of the six in Durham Region, four are in a deficit position totalling well over $1 million. The report notes that while the number of admissions declined slightly last year (from 1721 to 1599) the number of total patient days increased from 12753 to 14075. The number of births remained just about con- stant at 168; the number of operations rose slightly to 547, and there was a signifi- cant increase in the number of physiotherapy visits from 4303 to 5091. Despite the concerns expressed at the meeting for the deficit the highlight was the official announcement that a new addition to the hospital would get underway early next spring at an (Turnto page 10) Durham MP raps budget Durham-Northumberland M.P.
