Utica and area news items by Vera Brown Church service resumes once again at Utica at the regular 11:00 a.m. A reminder that on July 20th at 5:30 p.m., everyone is invited to a congregational retreat to be held at Good- wood Church. Take a bag lunch, refreshments are provided. Winners at the euchre Fri- day evening were 1st Elsie Taylor, 2nd Dora Geer and low Viola Campsall. Men's 1st Harold McDiarmid, 2nd Alvin Spencer and low to William Hill. Freeze-out winners were Nora Prentice andIrwin Kydd with Gladys Slack and Clara Whitter Ladies golf league by Vera Brown There was a good turnout for golfing this past Tuesday and some good scores recorded. Low net was Donna Shanley with 20. Low gross Vera Brown 46. Least putts was 12 by Vivian Rider who was followed by Joyce Emmerson with 13. Ev. Sheffield chipped in on no.4 which gave her only 14 putts. Apparently the good weather has improved the putting of the ladies. This week we visit Summerlea and a reminder to all the ladies, please see that you have a game played for team scores this week if you haven't already got one in. and p° coming 2nd. There will be another euchre this Friday at 8 p.m. The community was shocked and saddened on Wednesday to hear of the sudden passing of Elva Sutherland. Sympathy is extended to Robert and family in their bereavement as well as to Mr. Nelson Ashton, Fred and family. Mr. and Mrs. William Brown were Monday supper guests with daughter Dorothy and family in Oshawa. On Wednesday the Brown's had a surprised visit from an uncle Mr. George Fawcett of Toronto. On Sunday they called on the Tom Browns at Beaverton - and attended the steam show at the Beaverton Fair grounds. Mrs. Aileen Harper of Bowmanville called on her aunt Mrs. Delia Harper on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Herb Leighton of Bowmanville and daughters Connie and Eleanor called on Mrs. Crosier on Tuesday. Mrs. Leighton, a former Utica resident, was celebrat- ing her 89th birthday. Better late than never I guess, but I just heard recently that Mr. and Mrs. J. Grier and Mr. Harold Dobson were injured a few weeks ago in an automobile accident in Port Perry. I'm pleased to report that they are all coming along quite well and I trust will soon be completely recovered. These two teams were very closely matched and played tremendous ball. Scar- borough picked up their 3 runs in the first and second innings, unfortunately for Port they could not score their base runners. Due to excellent pitching and defense neither team scored any runs after the second inning. Three months ago Dana Manning spent her first week end away from home at her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hacket of Cannington while her parents, Karen and Danny attended the 4th annual Unionville U-Joint Picnic along with a wedding in Toronto. Last Thursday Mr. and Mrs. Rick Olaisen and boys took their aunt Merle Murphy to Wonderland. All reported having a very good day.
