~~ 20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday July 13, 1982 'Who is 1982 truck hero! The search is on for Canada's 1982 national truck hero. A reward of $200 will be paid to the person or organ- ization that nominates the professional trucker who becomes the 27th annual recipient of the award. "Professional truck drivers perform many acts of bravery every year, that usually receives no recogni- tion, yet their unselfish acts frequently avert serious accidents and save many lives in the course of a year," explains Albert G. Kraemer, president of Firestone Canada Inc., sponsor of the ""-~award, endorsed by the Canada Safety Council. "Besides the important economic contribution the trucking industry makes, it is important to remember that chances are the pro- fessional truck driver will be the first on the scene during a road mishap, the first good samaritan to administer assistance. The annula competition focuses public attention on the many acts of bravery performed by pro- fessional truck drivers' Mr. Kraemer added. In 1981, Gordon Rasmussen of Calgary was the national truck hero. He was quick to act when he saw a rubber raft capsize and dump its four occupants in Calgary's Bow River. The rafting tragedy, which occurred on the weir near the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery claimed the life of one man. According to fire fighters who arrived on the scene after the rescue, the victims all should have been dead » since once you get caught in that weir, the water just sucks you down and won't let you go. The selected hero will receive $1000 cash prize, a V.LP. all expense paid week- end at a luxury Toronto hotel including first class travel arrangements, and a personal trophy, all courtesy of Firestone, as well as an inscribed Rolex wrist watch, courtesy of Rolex watch company.
