The full Durham Region council will meet this week with three federal MPs who represent areas of the Region. The meeting, which will get underway late Wednes- day afternoon (July 14) in the Regional council chambers in Whitby will focus on economic concerns and especially some of the federal policies which are having a negative economic impact on Durham Region. The three MPs who will be present for the meeting are NDP leader Ed Broadbent, whose home riding is Oshawa, and Conservative Bill Scott and Scott Fennell. Durham - Northumberland, MP Allan Lawrence, who is also a Conservative, had been invited to attend but he declined due to a prior commitment. The meeting was arranged after Regional council asked its management committee to come up with a report on the general economic con- ditions in Durham and what sectors of the local economy are feeling the tightest pinch during the current recession period. Some of the concerns Port Perry company awarded contract Ira Carr Construction of Port Perry has been awarded a Durham Region contract for the reconstruc-. tion of Regional Road 37 in Pickering. Regional council approved the contract last week and it is worth $228,000. The bid was the lowest of eight submitted which ranged upwards to $319,000. The contract calls for re- construction of .08 km. of Durham Road 37 from Dixie ~ to Fairport Road. The tender amount does not included $34,000 for engineering and contin- gencies. Regional council had budgeted $186,000 for the project, however a report from the Works department shows that the job will cost more because of very poor soil conditions. Work on the project is expected to start in mid-July and be complete by the end of September. Robert Walker took over the position on July 2, 1982 replacing Bruce Hull who held the position for twenty-four of his 37 years with the postal organization. Mr. Walker is a resident of Brooklin, Ontario where he was Postmaster for eight and half years. He began his, career in the Post Office in his hometown of Barrie in 1968. Mr. Walker told the Star he was pleased with his new appointment as it elevates him from a grade five to a grade six, Post Office, and becomes responsible for. seven other regional offices ome of which include, Prince Albert, Ashburn, Blackstock and Caesarea. For the present time, Mr. Walker will continue to live in Brooklin with his wife Dianne and two children, Shelley 15, and Tammy 10. The Re- gional council's manage- ment committee apparently wants the meeting to take place behind closed doors, however when this issue was raised at last week's council meeting, some members of the council expressed concern over this. It's expected that the meeting will be open to the press, however, as radio and newspaper reporters who cover Regional council have expressed a strong interest in being able to report on the proceedings of the meeting.
