(Fd FEAR ea TR ERATED IA SVE EN Yo ahd FE or LEER LAY SINC Theft of cable brings $300 fine An Uxbridge man has been fined $300 after pleading guilty in court to theft of cable TV signal. The charge was initiated last February by Compton Cable TV of Port Perry and Uxbridge. The company charged that Cecil Richards of Bascombe St., Uxbridge, hooked into the cable line without author- ity and refused to pay any bills. When the matter came up in a Pickering Court July 12, the accused first entered a plea of not guilty but changed it when told that Compton Cable could prove from its records that no pay- ments had been made. In addition to the $300 fine, Richards was placed on pro- bation for three months and ordered to pay all arrears owing to the company. This is the second time that Compton Cable has pressed a charge of theft of its cable signal and both resulted in convictions. Hair Removing ... A population forecast report to be presented to Regional council this week, shows that the population of Durham will jump by about 100,000 people in the next 20 years, a figure which is smaller than the growth estimates made in 1978 and 1980, The report shows Durham with a 1982 population of 286,650 people, and by 2002, that total will be 375,000 people. The report says the main reason the population increases are not as large as once predicted is that employment opportunities in Durham, and especially in Metro Toronto, are shrink- ing. The report says that in previous forecasts, Metro Toronto was considered "a limitless job market area." However, that has changed as a result of a poorer job market in Ontario generally. In keeping with the overall population figures now pro- jected, the report predicts that Scugog Township's growth rate will be modest over the next 20 years. The present population of 13,640 will increase to about 16,900 by the year 2002, The prediction for Uxbridge Township is even more modest with the population increasing from the present 11,185 to 11,660 241 QUEEN ST. 985-2272 over the next 20 years. The report also predicts that Newcastle will also have virtually no population increase over the next 20 years. . And Brock Township will continue to be the smallest municipality in Durham where growth will be modest from the current 9330 to 10,205 by the year 2002. Although the City of Oshawa will experience some growth over the next 20 years from the present 118,000 to 138,000, the two municipalities in Durham which will grow the fastest are Whitby and Pickering. ~ The report predicts that Pickering's present population of 38,000 will "almost double to reach just over 70,000 in the next 20 years. Whitby will be less dramatic, with the present 38,000 population growing to about 52,000 by 2002. The report says the population predictions are based on three factors: the job opportunity market in Durham and Toronto; the fertility rate and the mortality rate. The report is predicting that Durham's present natural birth rate will con- tinue to be slightly higher than the national average. Graduates names missed from list In the lists of honour students from Port Perry High School carried in the Star last week, three grade 12 names were omitted. Alan Ferguson, Christine Ferguson and Terry Reaume should have been included with the grade 12 names. Also, it must be pointed out the grade 13 Ontario scholars are students who have been recommended for this honour by the High School. Technically, they are not Ontario scholars until their recommendations have been accepted by the Ontario Education Ministry. SPECIAL $27500 VALUE! (REGULAR $391.) muy SPECIAL VALUE includes: *3 Yr.
