4 SEAS, RED a I~ ni 5 2A Ei NS et, = Sct SR A Ak 3 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday July 20, 1982 Shannon Brown a child model (From page 1) so something she doesn't like." The Pageant weekend was demanding. Shannon waited almost 12 hours before going before the judges for a rou- tine which lasted all of two minutes. There are hundreds of hopefuls, boys and girls, and adults, all ages up to 30 with the youngest just two years old. There were three cate- gories: beauty, talent and modelling. The first place winners in each category get a chance to compete in the Hemi- sphere Pageant, now in its 19th year in the United States which claims to offer winners more than $750,000 in cash and prizes, a chance for a part in a movie, and the chance that they will be noticed. Mrs. Brown told the Star she decided to enroll Shannon in modelling school about a year ago. After checking out agencies and schools in Toronto, decided to go with Ms. Leja's school in Whitby. It can be expensive. Al- though the cost of the weekly lessons are tax deductible, there is the cost for new clothes, a photo portfolio and the travel to such things as the Pageant in Toronto last week. Mrs. Brown estimates staying the weekend at the hotel cost about $200. And she had to line up several local sponsors (indi- summer ... viduals and businesses) to contribute $200 so that a full page picture of Shannon would appear in a Pageant booklet. Although the picture of Shannon in that booklet is excellent, many of the other pictures were reproduced so poorly it is virtually imposs- ible to even tell who they are. For her efforts at the Pageant and the 4th place finish, Shannon was pre- sented with a large trophy and wrist watch. Ms. Leja says that despite the problems connected with the Pageant, it is a useful and a necessary experience for anyone thinking about being a model. And the competition is extremely keen. Next month, Shannon will be having some interviews and possibly auditions with casting directors and agencies in Toronto. Her resume and photo portfolio have already been sent. But there are no guarantees, of course. Ms. Leja said getting the first 'break' is crucial, because agencies and casting directors like to use the same models again and again, once they have proven themselves. So, with a little luck or a good "break" the tiny whisp of a girl with a pixie face, long brown hair and huge eyes filled with expressions, may show up on your TV set, or in a department store catalogue.
