However, the business of making top quality gymnastic shoes [in 22 colours] is just one of the interests of the couple [See story]. SHA Karl Herder Construction Ltd. *Cottage Raising 985-3885 by Valerie MacDonald Some people say, "'I wish I'd done that in my life." One man who won't is Dave Sandy; and neither will his 'wife Marie. Between them they have built islands, trained Olympic gymnasts, toured summer stock theatre and created mountains out of mole hills. Let me explain. Dave and Marie are a middle aged couple who left the pressures of Toronto behind and relocated at View Lake in Scugog Township. But the story doesn't start there. Prior to the move they taught olympic level gymnastics, building up a _ studio clientele which also included dancers. The kids they trained also performed-.. in commercials and films, as well as private shows. "But--the pace was- too much", says Marie. So they bought three horses and journeyed to the most north- ern part of Scugog Township where they purchased a hundred acre farm. This drastically affected the Sandys income which plummetted to $60. a week from a previous $700. But necessity is the mother of invention they say, so "Big Star Sandy Shoes" was born. The product of the company is gymnastics slippers. Dave says while they were teach- ing the sport (gymnastics) they made them for their own students. No Canadian company manufactured the slippers then and says Dave, "they were too costly to import from Europe." The first year after their move to the country they week. The market includes coast-to-coast chains like Pedal Boats & Canoes Ck Port Perry 159 Casimir Street From their View Lake farm this couple dresses the feet of anadian gymnasts done here. Twenty-three home sewers assemble the slippers and then packaging and shipping is completed from the plant. Marie says, "Creating work for home sewers is helping quite a few people who can't go 'out' to work." The sewers come from Oak- wood, Rosedale, Dunsford, Raglan, Peterborough, in fact from all over this area. Dave adds, '"The people who work here all take a personal interest in the business. Their work is excellent and if we're press- ed to get a rush order out, the girls all pitch in...It's a home thing...like everyone's 'a relative." But __the .company has 'grown so much since its inception four years ago that Dave feels a move to larger quarters will be made next spring. "Maybe Port Perry or Lindsay", he says. ! But the present "factory" that the Sandys manage really doesn't look like a business. Its western style appearance is carried inside with an office that looks more like an exotic den. The landscaping further enhances the extraordinary picture with a man-made lake and island skirted by mountains of clay and boulders. Planting pines and other vegetation on the mountain side and on the waterway is underway now. Although Dave says he's before (both he and Marie say they can't even grow a garden), his enthusiasm and *Prefab Fireplaces made and sold a little over drive appears to be all that's Over 20 Years serving Port Perry & area *Renovations * three thousand pair, now needed to create this - Using Top Quality Parts & Equipment - 10 Bays to Serve You - *Construction they ship that many out in a fantasy.
