Mrs. Fran McLaughlin told the Star she saw the balloon skimming across the lake and thought it was going to land in the water. After getting away from the water, the balloon then floated up over the Island and came dangerously close to hydro lines, before setting down in a small field on the Wm. Middleton farm on Scugog Island. The pilot of the balloon was Jill Lockhart of Mississauga, on her 4th solo flight since getting her licence two weeks ago, and with her was a passenger, Dave Scott. Lockhart told Mrs. McLaughlin that the Middle- ton field was the only one they could see for miles that was not standing with corn and since they were running low on fuel they decided to put down. According to information Fran McLaughlin received from the balloon pilot, they had taken-off from Sanford, north of Uxbridge, at about 6:55 p.m. with a chase vehicle in close pursuit. When they were forced to land on Scugog Island a number of area residents who had seen the balloon in trouble followed them and helped pack up the balloon. Although Lockhart did not like to call the situation an emergency landing, she did say it was a quick and necessary one.
