L ~ Farm crop outlook 'fair' Despite wet and rainy con- ditions experienced at the beginning of the summer season, crops are doing fairly well say farm officials. ~ Brian Hall, Agricultural representative in Bowman- ville; told the Star that the Course offered in self defense With the increasing vio- lence against women, the Oshawa YWCA is offering a new programe -- Self Defense for Women -- begin- ning in September. In this program taught by a member of the Police Force, participants will learn basic self-defense techniques such as -- What to do in life-threatening situations -- What to carry in your purse -- How to avoid placing yourself in danger- ous situations. This is a good course to increase your awareness of attack pre- vention. The classes will be held Wednesdays, 7:30 -- 9:30 p.m., September 22 to Oct- ober 27. The fee is $22 less $2 for YW members and res- idents. Registration for YW Fall '82 Programs for YW members and registrants begins Tuesday, August 17th,' 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and for the public Friday, August 20th, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Program Building, McGrigor and Simcoe Sts., Oshawa. wet weather in June resulted in little growth of some crops. Corn crops suffered the most due to the cool weather causing stunted growth with an uneveness in height. Humid weather slowed down the harvesting of grain which was said to be uneven also, but it seemed to re cover more than the corn crops. Mr. Findley, Agricultural Representative for Uxbridge said that many farmers are on their second and third hay cuttings. The first cut of hay this year was reported poor, again due to the June rains, which left most hay over- matured and damaged. Fortunately, the warm July month brought about an increase in growth. The wheat yield is normal although some fields were damaged during the severe thunderstorm last month. Fruits have been sprayed more than usual. Mr. Hall attributed this to the wet weather. Strawberries were late this year due to cool weather, but apples look good as compared to last year's crop. As a result of the high humidity, some cereal crops did not dry properly, but Mr. Hall said that no long-term effects are expected. Black top troubles Black top county roads can mean trouble, the Ontario Safety League warns motorists. Be ready for holes and loose gravel, especially at bends in the road where the extra force of turning vehicles breaks up the surface faster. Such holes can send you skiddipg off the road or into another vehcile.
