The building permit figures for July reflect the dismal trend during all of 1882 where construction is less than half what it was for the same period last year. Up until the end of July, there had been permits issued in Scugog for $2.9 million worth of construc- tion. For the same six months in 1981, the figure was $6.4 million. Hardest hit has been construction of new homes where there have been 30 permits issued this year so far, compared with 93 during the same time last year. However, industrial and commercial permits total $462,000 so far in 1982, up from just $79,000 a year ago. There have been declines this year in the value of additions and alterations, garages and swimming pools, and farm buildings. Municipal officials are hoping for an improvement if the 20 or so lots still remaining in the Perry Glen Estates are developed this year. At this time, they are not sure whether the devel- oper will go ahead and build those 20 homes this year. Council not interested in a Fantasy Island Scugog Township is not interested in buying Seven Mile Island at this time, or at any time in the future. The 26 acre island in Lake Scugog, complete with several houses, spacious gardens, boat house and swimming pool, all connect- ed to Scugog Island by a manmade causeway, is up for sale at about $700,000. Members of Scugog coun- cil toured the location which has been dubbed "Fantasy Island" and Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor said a rep from Simcoe Realty tried to interest the Township in buy- ing the property. "I told him very clearly the Township is not interest- ed in the least in buying that property," said the Mayor on Monday. Since the Island, which has been owned for the past several years by Patrick Harrison, went up for sale recently, it has been the subject of stories in Toronto papers and a couple of TV news programs. Mayor Taylor did say that the real estate company now trying to sell the island has requested to send a rep to the September 13 meeting of Township council to discuss what kinds of possibile use a new owner could make of the 26 acre retreat.
