a em a ---- Rain throws slight curve at the Western Weekend Two out of three isn't bad, these days™ Sunny skies brought out the crowds for two of the three days during the annual Western Weekend held in Port Perry Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And despite the rain-out on Sunday organizers say the large crowds the other two days made up for it. When the sun was shining, Queen Street was alive with activities, and Chamber of Commerce president Miriam Price said the par- ticipation among local merchants and at the flea market seemed to be up this year. Richard Drew, one of the organizers of the Western Weekend, which is sponsored by the Scugog Chamber of Changes in laws (From pagel) and the other for two years less a day. She said that society's attitude towards crimes against women is reflected in general apathy on the part of the public and a lack of support (both financially and otherwise) for crisis centres which help victims of these crimes. Ms. Ross said the local crisis centre is now in the process of trying to screen the NFB film "A Scream from Silence" in Port Perry. The film depicts a brutal rape and the eventual suicide of the victim, based on a true story. "It is very tough to get convictions and will stay that way until society's attitudes change towards victims of these kinds of crime and towards women in general," said Ms. Ross. M&I MACHINE SHOP Head Rebuilding & Exchange Engines Rebuilt - Rotor & Drum Turning Flywheel Resurfacing - Sand Blasting REGIONAL ROAD 8 - PORT PERRY 985-9345 Commerce, said Monday that he was pleased with the way things went, even though the rain Sunday put a damper on activities planned for that day. He said it's too early to tell just how much money the Chamber will raise from the Weekend, but he indicated that crowds at the dances at the Arena, may have been down from last year. The arena dances are a major source of funds to pay for the Weekend activities. However, he did say the Weekend will show a profit for the Commerce. Mr. Drew said he was pleased at the amount of participation from merchants who put a lot of work into the displays and the costumes for their employees. The award for the best inside display was won by Settlement House; IGA won for the best outside display and Karen Taylor Cosmetics was judged to have the best costumes. Best of the rain Sunday, two events have been re- scheduled for this Friday evening. These are the water show of kite flying and bare- foot skiing which will be held at 7:45 at the waterfront. Also the Novelty races for children from tots to teens will be held on Friday evening starting at 7:15 at the Scugog Library on Water Street. There are lots of prizes for the youngsters.
