PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday August 31, 1982 -- 23 How to make Farm income is steadily declining but new approa- ches to agriculture may reverse this trend for some of eastern Ontario's farmers. Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology has organized a seminar for Sat. October 16, entitle, "How to Make Money on The Small Farm' and hopes that small farmers may be encouraged to make their operations more profitable. There are many commo- dities in eastern Ontario which do not require a large landbase. The seminar will focus on some of these to show farmers the economic realities as well as the advantages of disadvantages of each commodity. This is not pie-in-the-sky dreaming; each speaker will be curr- ently involved in the produc- tion of the food or commodity under discussion. There will also be ample time available to closely question speakers to get a full appreciation of the production systems cash on the farm A few of the commodies include: greenhouse veg- etables, herbs, raspberries, strawberries, intensive animal husbandry, and market gardening. There will also be other speakers who will join in to share their innovative ways of achieving small farm success. If a farmer is looking for an alternative income, or wants to explore commodies requiring only a few acres, a day spent talking to those engaged in that commodity production is well spent. Hobby or part-time farmers may find the ideas they need to make their operation self supporting. An idea from our successful, innovative, small acreage farmers could be the key to economic success for some of eastern Ontario's small farms.
