by Joyce Kelly Many local residents were Surprised to learn of the unexpected passing of former Purple Hill resident Mrs. E.R. Taylor of Ennis- killen late Saturday night. Mrs. Taylor had attended the Blackstock Fair as she had for many many years and passed away later that night. She was a sister-in-law of Mrs. Wilbur Toms and has many relatives in this area. The funeral will be held on Tuesday from Bowmanville. Pleased to report that Neil Bailey has returned from surgery on his neck to correct a long suffered pro- blem. We wish you a speedy recuperation, Neil. Mrs. Helen Gotham arrived from England on Saturday night to visit her son and his wife, Bernie and Glenys Gotham. Sorry you missed the Fair, Mrs. Gotham. Nancy and Bob Bryans have returned home from three weeks of holidays at their cottage on Sturgeon Lake. About fifty people attended a get-together at the Bryans farm to say "hello" to Art and Janet Essery, Dan, Tammy and Darren visiting the area from St. Cloud, Minnesota. They accompanied Norm and Linda Stiles, and children. Services will be conducted by Mr. Rolf Petersen in St. John's Anglican Church, Blackstock for the month of September prior to the arrival of Rev. Ansley Tucker in October. Nancy and Bob Bryans were supper guests of Gisele Cormier and Carl Vesna of Oshawa. They also called on Babe and Wilf Brown at Courtice. Guests last weekend of Floyd and Verona Beatty were Pastor Gary and Marilyn Robinson of Hudson's Bay, Saskatche- wan. Gary is here for his ordination at St. Mathews Lutheran Church, Scar- borough. Annette Keuning has arrived home after spending two years in Nigeria with C.U.S.0. Welcome home. Hope that you will share some of your experiences with the rest of us. Guests with Dale 'and Anita Davis were the Gor- bald family and Shirley and Cliff Balkwill of Ruthven. Much catching of the news of their previous home would be taking place. If Rev. and Mrs. D. Davis are looking especially proud these days - they have a very good reason. They have become grandparents for the first time with the arrival of Congratulations Dale and Anita. Thanks to everyone for the wonderful support of the 50-50 draw for the new Black- stock Baseball Diamond. The winner was Beth Schry- burt. Vern V ogel handed her a cheque for $1006. at the Fair on Saturday. Her winning number was 881. This amount, plus the sup- port of Blackstock Lions make the diamond a sure success. AEE - The Tug of War competition proved to be ver popular with the crowds at the Fair, The annual Mountjoy Picnic was held at Breezy Acres,' home of Harvey and Joan Graham. Members of the clan returned from var- ious points in Ontario to combine Fair and Family Picnic for a great weekend of visiting. News from Blackstock and area Recently Roy and Mildred Hope attended the wedding of Mildred's niece at Pene- tang. They also enjoyed a boat cruise while there. Last Monday surprise guests of Hector and May Shortridge were Hector's nephew Mr. and Mrs. Ross Williams and Kim of Engle- fart. Last Sunday Mildred Hope and Beth Stewart were guests at a bridal shower for Mildred's granddaughter y contested by these teams taking and was hotly these faces show it's tough pulling. Jeannette Felstead who was married recently in Alberta. They are currently visiting relatives in this area. The shower was held at the home of the bride's mother, Helen Cockwell, Oshawa. The dates are Nov- ember 12, 13, 14, 17, 20. The title "Irene", a very funny musical play set in the early 20's will be presented com- plete with singers, dancers, orchestra and period costuming. Though casting for the main leads has already been done, this will not be com- pleted until mid-September. Present members are reminded of our first rehearsal, Wednesday, Sept- ember 8, 8:00 P.M. Cedar Creek by George Kilpatrick Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Mills and son, John of Brampton, visited Mr. and Mrs. Victor Larocque on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Farrow and son of South River visit- ed the Rick Larocque family over the weekend. Richard Larocque returned home with the Farrows after spending a week at South River. Andie Farrow return- ed home with her parents. She had spent a week with the Larocques. Allen Keetch and son, Ken of Whitby, visited George Kilpatrick on Saturday after- noon. Well over .150 balloons were launched into space. Winners of last years contest were present from New York State, Oshawa and Kin- mount. They had all been found in the Bancroft area. A fine horse pull was held with John Lawrenson winning the Light Class and Dwight Corbett the heavy Mary Lou Carnochan [left], representing the Royal Bank is seen here presenting a silver platter to Mrs. Mary Helen Prentice. Mrs. Prentice won the most points for baking and canning at the Blackstock Fair and was declared the Domestic Science Champion. class.
