The Gamblers will now compete in In what has to be the most exciting fastball playoff in many years, the Greenbank Gamblers edged Brooklin Legion to earn the right to go to Wingham for the Ontario Championship Playoff series on September 18th and 19th. This three game series went right down to the wire as Greenbank edged Brook- lin by a 2-1 score in the third and final game on Sept- ember 2. The Gamblers got off to a poor start in the series as John Annis (pitching for Brooklin) shut them out in the opening game by a score of 3-0. Annis struck out 17 Greenbank batters in this game with Dennis Romeril being the only Gambler batter to hit safely. The second game of the series played before a large crowd in Greenbank saw Gary Baker give the Gamblers an early 1-0 lead as he homered over the left-centre field fence. Ken Goreski on the Green- bank mound kept the Brook- catch. Don Beaton then lined a single to left field and moved to third as Don Phinneys ground ball was misplayed by the Brooklin infield. Neil Rodd beat out a bunt to load the bases and then Ken Irvine hit a sacrifice fly to centre field to score Beaton with the second Greenbank run. The Gamblers held the 2-0" lead into the ninth inning but lead off batter Paul MacCrimmon hit a home run to cut the Greenbank lead to a single run. This was Mac- Crimmons third hit of the game and his sixth hit in the series. However Irvine got the next two batters to fly out to Greg Rodd in right field before pinch hitter Jim Reynolds drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. This brought the Brooklin first baseman to the plate, Paul Brown, who had hit the home run in Green- bank in game two. Irvine pitched carefully to him and struck him out to end the game. It was a big win for the Gamblers as they will now represent zone 5 at the Ont- ario ""C" Championship round in Wingham on the week end of September 18- 19th. The Championship series will have the eight division winners from all-Ontario competing in a double knock- out series for the Ontario Senior "C" Championship. The final game saw the Greenbank bats come alive as they finally made good contact with the offerings of pitcher John Annis. The Gambler attack was led by Bill Thomson, Don Beaton and Neil Rodd with two hits each with Dennis Romeril, Jay Williams, Greg Rodd and John Foster each picking up one hit. Greenbank now swing back into league semi-final play off action where they presently trail Claremont Legion one game to nothing, after dropping a 2-1 decision in Claremont last Tuesday night. v lin hitters well in check until the sixth inning when Paul Brown hit a two run home the all-Ontario CASA tournament later this month in Wingham, Ontario. Jay Williams playing left field was injured on the play as he hit the fence while chasing Browns drive and had to leave the game. The Brooklin team hung on to their one run lead until the bottom of the ninth inning. Greg Rodd led off the ninth with a base on balls and promptly stole second base. 'John Foster attempted to sacrifice Rodd to third base but Annis threw the ball low to first base and both 'runners were safe. Foster stole second base on the first pitch to set the stage for shortstop Don Beaton. The Brooklin Manager held a conference on the mound and they decided to pitch to Beaton. This proved to be a bad decision as Beaton hit a long home run out of the park and gave Greenbank a "come from behind" 4-2 victory. Ken Goreski scattered nine hits to earn the win and tie the series at a game apiece. Brooklin won the toss for home ground for the third and deciding game and it was played last Thursday night. To say this game was a would be fairly accurate. Ken Irvine who had lost the opening game came back in this one to pitch a masterpiece. Irvine collected thirteen strike outs over the nine innings while his teammates finally solved the pitchers of John Annis. The game was scoreless _until the bottom of the fourth inning when Greg Rodd led off with a triple. John Foster then flied deep to right field with Rodd scoring after the An article in the fall issue of the Ontario Fisherman, on local news-stands now, has an excellent story about fishing on Lake Scugog. Entitled Scugog's Weedy Walleye, the story is written by Steve Vidakovich, a con- firmed Lake Scugog walleye (pickerel) fisherman. "Scugog, or the 'Swamp' as many call it, can be one of the best walleye fisheries around, if you know how and where to fish," Vidakovich writes. In addition to information on how and where to catch the Scugog Walleye, the article gives plenty of infor- mation on shallow water fishing and the types of lures to use in the weedy lake. |, But aside from the fishing, Mr. Vidakovich also gives Port Perry and the surroun- ding area a pat on the back. He concludes his article by saying "If you're planning a trip to Lake Scugog, there are marinas on the Port Perry and Caesarea side of the lake that offer excellent service and a friendly suggestion as to where to concentrate your fishing . efforts. As well, there are local bait shops and excellent accommodations in Port Perry that will make your fishing excursion both successful and comfortable. Give it a chance, and I'm sure you'll be surprised. Do or die for The Canadian Tire team played the opening game of the semi-final series against Mr. G's at Durham Fields on August 30, coming away with a 6-2 win. Roland Osske went the distance on the mound, scattering 6 hits, striking out 10 and giving up just 2 walks. The Port Perry hitters were on for this game, with Carl Durward 3 for 3 and Denis Franssen 3 for 4 leading the way. Other hitters were John Bulter, Steve Redman, Dave Dickson, Bill Owen, Bob Ireland and Dave Canning. Mr. G's came to Port Perry on September 2, and evened the series at a game each, by a 4-2 score. The Port Juniors -home team lost this one by giving up three runs in the 5th inning, without a hit. The combination of 2 walks, an interference call, an error and 2 wild pitchers turned a 2 to 1 lead to a 4 to 2 defeat. Tim Thompson went 6 and one third innings to pick up the loss with Osske finishing the game. Port Perry had a total of 9 hits with Steve Redman going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and Grant Curnow 2 for 4. Other hitters were Dave Dickson, Denis Franssen, Bob Ireland and Mark Jeffrey, - The deciding game will be played at Durham Fields, . Wednesday, September 8 at 8:30 p.m.
