He won his first election easily in 1978, and was re- turned by acclamation in the election two years ago. Two candidates did de- clare Monday morning that they will be seeking election to the position in Ward 3. Don Cochrane, 48, a re- tired General Motors em- ployee, who now operates an auction business on Scugog Island, and Chuck Preston, 49, general manager and vice president of Zoecon In- dustries in Port Perry ann- sports in the . community serving many years on the executive 'of minor hockey and softball, including stints as president of both organiz- ations. Mr. Preston has been a resident of Ward 3 for the past year and a resident of Scugog Township for the past 13 years. . He is currently a vice president of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, has been chairman of the Scugog Library Board for the past five years, was chairman of Scugog Recreation comm- ittee for the past three years and served on the Business Advisory committee for the Durham Board of Education. Mr. Preston and his wife Marjorie have five grown children. WARD 4 And in Ward 4 (Cartwri- ght) incumbent John Wolters told the Star Monday that he plans to run for the area council seat this November. Councillor Wolters is a veteran of local politics completing his second st- raight term as the Ward 4 rep on Township council. He won the seat in a close race in the 1978 election and then was returned by acec- lamatin in the 1980 voting. Councillor Wolters owns and operates a successful dairy farm in Cartwright. So far, he is the only candidate to publicly declare an intention to seek the area council seat, which is curr- ently held by Don Crosier. He announced Monday that he would be seeking the Regional council this elect- ion (see separate story). Unlike ward councillors who are elected only by the voters within their respect- ive wards, the area council rep is elected by all the voters within.the Township. With councillor Wolters deciding to take a shot at the area seat, there is an open- .ing for the Ward 4 seat, but as of Monday evening, there had been no public declara- tions by possible candidates. WARD 1 In Ward 1, (Reach) in- cumbent Neil Hunter faces a challenge from Judy Latta of Greenbank who announced Monday her intention to seek election this November. Mr. McGeoghan told the Star that once the approval is granted, he is prepared to start construction immed- iately. He has owned the property since 1962. He indicated that if all the approvals are granted and the home is built, almost all of the clients would come from within a 13 mile radius. "It really is such a black and white issue," said Mrs. Jones. '"There just is no justification for the build-up of weapons in the world," she said. So far, more than 35 mun- icipalities in Ontario have agreed to include an anti- nuclear ballot for the Nov- ember municipal élections. When the matter came up for initial discussion at the council meeting Monday, Township administrator Earl Cuddie told councillors that including such a refer- endum with the ballot would not cost the Township any "extra money, except for the printing of the ballots. And he said counting the ballots would not pose any addit- " There is a real political battle starting to shape up in the race for the Scugog seat on the Durham Regional council. DON CROSIER Don Crosier, a six year veteran of Scugog Township councill annouced that he will challenge incumbent Regional councillor Law- rence Malcolm. To date, they are the only Er aCe ELGIN KNOPP PROPRIETOR two candidates to firmly de-' clare their intentions to seek the Regional seat when mun- icipal elections roll around on November 8. Councillor Crosier told the Star Monday morning that he made the decision after "much thought and soul- searching." Councillor Malcolm in- dicated in a Star survey two weeks ago that he will be seeking re-election. And there may be others in the hunt for votes on Nov- ember 8. Incumbent Ward 2 councillor Robert Espey said two weeks ago that he had not made up his mind if he would seek re-election, but said if he does, he likely will go after the Regional seat. Councillor Malcolm, who was out of Town Monday at a conservation Authority meeting, was not available for comment on the chall- enge from councilor Crosier. In making the announce- ment to seek the Regional seat, councillor Crosier said that it has been his ambition since he entered municipal politics six years ago. ~ "I feel that now is the time for me to make a move as being the Regional rep has been on my mind for the last six years," he said. Councillor Crosier was first elected to local council as the Ward 1 rep in 1976, and re-elected in 1978. He moved to the area cogncil seat in the 1980 election, winning easily over one other opponent. A life long resident of the Township he recently sold his dairy farm and moved into Prince Albert. He is now working part time at a local meat packing plant and help- ing his daughter and son-in- law with a dairy farming operation near Woodville. He has been active in local agricultural circles for many years and has been a mem- ber of the Lake Simcoe Con- servation Authority for the last five years. In making the announce- ment that he intends to run for the Regional seat, coun- cillor Crosier said he has nothing against the incum- bent. "I just figured that if I'm going to try to make a move, now is the time," he stated.
