But Mr. DeHart, a long time veteran of the Regional council, said he would with- draw from the chairman's race if fellow Oshawa coun- cillor John Aker decides to be a candidate. Mr. Aker, also a veteran of Oshawa and Regional politics, was de- feated in 1980 by Mr. Herrema is a close vote for the Regional chairman's seat. It appears from Mr. DeHart's announcement last week that he wants to make the vote for Regional chair- man a 'rural-urban' issue, as he claims that a Regional chairman from an urban area like Oshawa would be more in tune to urban pro- blems and issues. That suggestiort has been denied strongly by Mr. Herrema, who says he is not out of tune with the urban issues in Durham Region. Mr. Herrema is a former Mayor of Uxbridge Town- ship and operates a large dairy farm in Uxbridge. ment was formed in 1974, there has never been a Regional chairman from an urban area of the Region. The first chairman was Walter Beath, who was appointed to the job initially and then went on to win two further races in voting by the 30 member Durham council. He stepped down in 1980 and Mr. Herrema defeated John Aker in a close vote. ~ The fact that there has never been a Regional chair- man from Oshawa has been a sore point with some members of Durham council who come from that city, since Oshawa is the largest municipality in the Region and has the most (11) seats on the Regional council. Mr. DeHart is completing a two year term as chairman of the Region's big budget social services committee. Mr. Aker is currently the chairman of the powerful finance committee for Durham Region. Mr. Herrema has stated that he will be seeking another term as chairman of the Region.
