September 21, 1982 Sports With thrilling 3-1 victory against Bowmanville a Perry girls we kJ The soccer field at Monarch Park in Ajax was like a wet sponge last Saturday afternoon as Port Perry and Bowmanville took to the field for the Durham Girls Mosquito Soccer Championship. The Port Perry Legion Squirts received Silver Medallions, finishing in second place. High School teams ready for action by Kathleen Taylor Port Perry High School's sports are getting underway and all around the school you can feel that winning "Rebel" spirit rising. The coaches are picking their teams from a lot of eager players who are trying desperately to get back into shape after a lazy summer in the sun. The first teams to kick-off their seasons were the senior and junior boys soccer teams. These two teams played at Ajax on September 14 with the seniors losing 3-1, the goal scored by Dave , Rodych. The juniors game was called at half-time because of rain with the score tied 0-0. They also played an at-home game against Dunbarton on Thurs- day, September 16. The seniors lost 4-1 with Dave Rodych again scoring the lone goal. The juniors were able to obtain a 1-1 tie with the goal scored by Gerry Fowler. The next game is September 21, against Harwood and it is only the Junior team that is playing. We have one girls Varsity field hockey team this year. It's first exhibition tourna- ment is on Saturday, Sept-. ember 25 at Laurier in Scar- borough. The girls basketball season is also starting with league play beginning Sept- ember 29 for all three teams. Tryouts for the boys volleyball teams are also underway. With the caliber of players we have at PPHS it looks as though we are going to another winning Rebel year. - ville player who fell, sending up a spray of water. Port Perry won the game in overtime by a score of 3-1. Getting goals for Port Perry were Jill Parry with two and Dana Forder one. The first game in the best of three, was played in East Gwillimbury on Wednesday, September 15th; where Port came out on the losing end by a score of 6-0. The Squirts managed only four hits in the game, with three of these coming in the 5th inning, unfortunately we were unable to advance a runner past second base. Our only hitters were, Connors, Lally, Brown and Feasby. The second game played in Port Perry on Thursday night was a nail bitter, and was not decided until the 8th inning. Port had a 3-1 lead after one complete inning, East Gwillimbury added another run in the 2nd, with Port picking up one unearn- ed run in the 3rd. East Gwillimbury again narrow- ed Ports lead to one run in the 5th, making the score 4-3 in favor of Port Perry. Fast Gwillimbury took the lead in - 258 the 6th, picking up three runs, Port struggled back to tie the game at 6 all in the 7th and force an extra inning, where East Gwillimbury with the bases loaded connected for a grand slam, Port was unable to add to their score. ending an exciting game at 10-6. High Triple: Joyce Story - 591. Homestead Furniture -3 Bowmanville - 1 This game was played in Monarch Park in Ajax. The winner to receive the Durham Girls Mosquito Soccer Cup. The girls were on top of the world and all 15° plus coaches Eileen Gerber and Odessa Smith gave it their all. At the end of the game, the score was 1-1 tie, so two ten minute overtime periods were played. Home- stead Furniture scored 2 goals to win the game. Good end to end play and excellent positional soccer with goals by Dana Forder and Jill Parry (2). The team was awarded the trophy for the Cup Champion and the trophy for the league runner up. Congratulations from all your soccer fans. You were a great team and deservedly won all! MOSQUITO GIRLS Sept. 14 Homestead Furniture - 2 Ajax B-0 - An excellent game by Port even if it was in pouring rain in Ajax. Goals were by Dana Forder and Jill Parry from exceptional! workups and passes by all. This was a semi-final game and our win qualified our play in the finals. Sept. 15 Homestead Furniture - 3 Bowmanville - 2 This game was one from the regular schedule. The win placed us in second place in the regular season. The goals were by Jill Parry, Dana Forder and Jennifer Wonder. Good team effort. PEEWEE GIRLS Sept. 13 Barry's Variety - 0 Whitby -0 This was a good end to end game with good soccer skills in evidence by both teams. The game was scoreless and no overtime was played because of darkness. There had to be a score so the game was scheduled for the next night. Sept. 14 . Barry's Variety - 1 Whitby - 4 : At the end of regular play the night before their was no score. An extra ten minute overtime tonight resulted in no goal so a shoot out was called with Whitby scoring over Port. Our girls did go to Monarch Park Saturday, September 18 to receive the runner up trophy in the league. Congratulations girls for excellent. participation and team play. Oshawa won the game and took the Cup Day trophy. Our girls returned to Port Perry, trophies in hand, to celebrate the finale of soccer by having a Pizza party at Kathy and Ray Gundry's. Many thanks for housing the party that continued in the wee hours. Mrs. Laraby of Square Boy Pizza donated the pizza and sponsor Barry's Variety donated all the pop and chips. A super time was had by all the girls and coach Kathy Collins. SOCCER SCENE There will be a Level 3 Coaches Clinic the first weekend in October. It will be held at Harwood Secondary School in Ajax. A Level 2 Coaches Clinic will be held in Ajax, November 6, 7. If interested in attending either clinic please contact: Roy Cowling 986-4430 as soon as possible. The association members who eagerly participated in preparing and presenting the float in the Fair Parade, you caused us to win a first, second and third prize for our entry. Congratulations! DRYSL Finals (Durham Region Youth Soccer league) were held at "the Scugog Fields on Saturday, September 18. There were games from Squirts to Juniors from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. A good day was had by all. Many thanks to the crew who prepared and tidied up the grounds. Our soccer season has come to a close. There has been excellent participation by over 300 children in Scugog. Our thanks to all the parents for driving to games all over Durham, and for cheering the kids no matter what. Our coaches were the 'best and produced excellent team play. Thanks goes to our referees who never fail- ed us and always explained a whistle. They ran forever from end to end and always patiently discussed sideline calls. A job well done. A special thanks to all who sponsored our teams. We continue to belproud to wear your team sweater and dis- play your trophy. Sunnybrae golf by Vera Brown The last day of league play at Sunny Brae proved to be "Carol Jackson" day which included low gross of 46, low net of 26, 2 chip-ins which left her with onlv 12 butts, What a way to end the season. This 'week we have our fun day , and then on the 28th at 1 p.m. we have an afternoon of golf and our annual banquet at 6 p.m. at the Club House. ri A le TN
